Pluto isn't quite as lonely as scientists had thought.
Astronomers have discovered another dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, the ring of icy objects beyond Neptune. But this newfound world, dubbed 2015 RR245, is much more distant than Pluto, orbiting the sun once every 700 Earth years, scientists said. (Pluto completes one lap around the sun every 248 Earth years.)
"The icy worlds beyond Neptune trace how the giant planets formed and then moved out from the sun," discovery team member Michele Bannister, of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, said in a statement. "They let us piece together the history of our solar system."
...
The exact size of 2015 RR245 is not yet known, but the researchers think it's about 435 miles (700 kilometers) wide. Pluto is the largest resident of the Kuiper Belt, with a diameter of 1,474 miles (2,371 km).
The research team first spotted 2015 RR245 in February of this year, while poring over images that the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in Hawaii took in September 2015 as part of the ongoing Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS).
"There it was on the screen this dot of light moving so slowly that it had to be at least twice as far as Neptune from the sun," Bannister said.

If you've watched films of social insects interacting, you'll realize that what they're practicing is a form of facebook.
I like it because now I’m in touch with my nieces and nephews (not to mention the kids that never visit, write or call) and that’s important to me. I also learn about my siblings, though that information is scanty, at best.
It’s also a news source.
The doctor didn’t call yesterday, so I pulled up my medical info on SW Medical’s website. The red cell count is low, but not low enough to warrant a transfusion. I’m glad about that. That’s an all day job. :o| I’ll just keep taking the iron pills.
LOL!
Allergic to dog fur?
Only $3217.43 to get the car back on the road.
*GASP*
Did they use a mask and a sidearm?
What do the rest do?
BTW: I lived across the street from the GM of Orlando International growing up. His name was Normal Glass. His son-in-law was a catcher for the Minnesota Twins. His name is George Mitterwald. I would baby-sit George's kids sometimes. I got to work for "Buggar Bear" one summer soon after the new airport opened helping him organize his architectural drawings. It was kind of neat to be working at the Airport.
My car isn’t even worth that much.
I’m sure it was interesting. There used to be a lady in my Weight Watchers meeting who was a security guard at Charlotte airport.
Mine is. Now...
Less 15% wear and tear for taking it on the road again (cue Willie Nelson).
Temperature: 24 degrees, W @ 8 mph, Wind chill 15, 47%, Partly sunny.
I am NOT going outside! Winter has arrived, and I don’t feel well enough to put up with it.
When I walked the dog this morning the beeber said it was 17 Fs outside.
ICK! Winter! Poor dog. You can bundle up — dogs are stuck with the coats they were born with.
A lot of dogs in NYC wear coats. Ours won’t. But if she was cold you wouldn’t know it by her trying to, like, hurry or anything.
Cindy 1’s dog is like that. She has a coat she likes, but if Cindy tries to put another one on the dog, the dog will go hide, or scratch and roll around like she found a skunk.
Dogs are strange!
Well...
You DID replace half of its major subsystems.... ;-)
I note that the weather foreguesstimators are upping the ante. Previous foreguesses were saying a winter storm is heading our way and it would bless us with 1 - 3 inches of solidified glowbull warnthing. Now I’m getting alerts on my smortphome as well as the notalwaysAccuWeather pogrom on my main computing device saying that we’re in for 4 - 6 inches starting at midnight tonight till 4 pm Saturday.
I took a look at the radar display (on the smortphome) and didn’t see anything that would dump that much snow. Then I looked on the big-screen (main computer) which starts with the nationwide display. And said ‘So THAT’S where it is..’ Looks like my Sister in Minnesota is being blessed right now.
And a little later this afternoon my Sister in Ohio will be visited by the system (their weather advisory runs from 7pm tonight to noon tomorrow.)
Outside it is a balmy 25 degrees right now, up from a low of 8 degrees (when I looked at 0 dark 30 this morning at the indoor display of the data accumulated by the outdoor sensing and telemetering device.)
Oh, and they are saying that the snow will change to rain on Saturday and the temp will be in the 50’s on Sunday...
Needs more CO2, Captain..
Mass of earth ~ 6 * 10^24kg
Mass of humanity (est 6.5bn ppl) ~ 4 * 10^11
The earth outweigs us by about 15 trillion times.
I’m not sure there’s much we can do to this planet, Scotty.
