New Dwarf Planet Discovered Far Beyond Pluto's Orbit

Pluto isn't quite as lonely as scientists had thought.

Astronomers have discovered another dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, the ring of icy objects beyond Neptune. But this newfound world, dubbed 2015 RR245, is much more distant than Pluto, orbiting the sun once every 700 Earth years, scientists said. (Pluto completes one lap around the sun every 248 Earth years.)

"The icy worlds beyond Neptune trace how the giant planets formed and then moved out from the sun," discovery team member Michele Bannister, of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, said in a statement. "They let us piece together the history of our solar system."

...

The exact size of 2015 RR245 is not yet known, but the researchers think it's about 435 miles (700 kilometers) wide. Pluto is the largest resident of the Kuiper Belt, with a diameter of 1,474 miles (2,371 km).

The research team first spotted 2015 RR245 in February of this year, while poring over images that the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in Hawaii took in September 2015 as part of the ongoing Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS).

"There it was on the screen — this dot of light moving so slowly that it had to be at least twice as far as Neptune from the sun," Bannister said.

Wow, that’s a blast from the past. Anoreth would have gone, but I’m sure I wouldn’t.

As do I. Very interesting, I might add. That's what I get for trying to hibernate so early, I guess.

Morning, y’all. I was up a little too late texting with Anoreth, who was in a state of good cheer about the demise of Fidel Castro, and also in a state three time zones west.

It was 62 in the house this morning. DP turned the furnace on before I got up. Nice to know it works.

I was having a breathing treatment yesterday afternoon, and the phone rang. It was Zeke. He couldn’t get Chuck to talk to him on the phone and Chuck’s door was locked. Chuck said he couldn’t get to it. Zeke was all upset.

I was going to let it go, and instead, got up, put my pants and shoes on, grabbed a jacket and headed out the door. (Zeke used to live next door to Chuck, so they are good friends.) I got to Chuck’s and the police were there, the door was open (one of the officers had picked the lock) and Chuck was found in his recliner.

He is alive, but he has had a stroke. I don’t know how long he was there before Zeke found him, but he went to Thanksgiving dinner with a neighbor, so it was sometime Friday, we think.

He can talk, and is understandable, but still somewhat garbled, so I’m hoping with therapy, he makes a full recovery. Dang. Crazy Frank showed up just before the ambulance got there, and when they wheeled Chuck away, Crazy Frank put his arm around me and said, “C’mon. You need a beer.”

So I went and sat with him in the cold wind, and a few minutes later, Zeke showed up. I finished the beer and headed home, but stopped to tell LuDean, (Chuck has been trying to put the “moves” on her) and then went to tell Charlie, since we are The Peeps. A few more show up intermittently, but the four of us are mostly The Peeps.

I’m so sorry about Chuck! I hope he will recover; the fact that he can speak, even with difficulty, is a good sign.

That’s so cute! Is the officer going to ticket him for smoking in public?

Don’t think US Air Force has traffic enforcement powers in the UK.

Could be wrong...

about the photo being taken in the UK.

Zeke was at the clubhouse when I opened this morning, and we had several things to talk about, one of them being Chuck. As near as we can figure, the stroke hit sometime Friday night, so he was in his chair at least 20 hours.

Zeke was able to get some information from him, including Chuck’s son’s phone number, so the family has been duly notified. Zeke said Chuck was responsive and was able to answer questions, and that made me feel better about the situation. Apparently, it was a “mild” stroke, so the prognosis is good. He has not been feeling or looking good, over the last week, so I’m not surprised.

I’m just glad he was found in time to help him. Unfortunately, he lives alone, as do most of us, so that explains the delay. Ironically, Zeke used to have a spare key for Chuck’s place, but Chuck had the lock changed.

So now, the discussion today (if we can stand the wind) is for neighbors to have possession of spare keys. I’m going to go to Walmart and get one made for Charlie. He’s the only person I trust, here. Maybe Zeke, but...

I’ll tell Zeke to pass it on. Chuck remembers you with a smile on his face, and said you were pretty funny. I’ve said that for years, but I used the word, “strange.” :ducking and running:

Just got back from Walmart where I had a key made. The owners of the key vending machine are getting clever, now. They offer key chains at a 500% markup, so you can pay for over-priced keys as well as a chain to put them on.

Rather than take a chance on Charlie not having a spare keychain, I got one for him. The whole shebang was $5, but that’s pretty cheap in view of recent events.

Not me. And I don’t know why.

Anyway, I got him a key chain that he can clip onto whatever he wants. He usually wears a lanyard with his keys clipped on it, and a few people here do that, but I think it’s a nuisance.

Anyway, this is a strange Sunday, to be sure. With PBS doing their fund drive, I’ve had to find other things to compete with the background non-noise. But football will be on, soon, so I can listen to that until I get back in from talking with Charlie. I doubt we will stay out long.

53 degrees, 47%, S @ 8 mph, mostly sunny. For now. I saw that Mt Charleston has more snow on it, and it’s supposed to rain here today, so Charleston will get more snow. Good. From what I hear, Brian Head (three hours north) is already open for skiers.

Br-r-r-rrrr! I went out, knocked on LuDean’s door and waited for Charlie. We sat for about 15 minutes, during which time, I gave Charlie the key. And half a dozen Oreos.

But the wind was up and the clouds are coming in, so we all decided to go back home where it’s warm. Yes. Warm. I hate being cold!

I’m waiting for summer... :o|
