New Dwarf Planet Discovered Far Beyond Pluto's Orbit

Pluto isn't quite as lonely as scientists had thought.

Astronomers have discovered another dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, the ring of icy objects beyond Neptune. But this newfound world, dubbed 2015 RR245, is much more distant than Pluto, orbiting the sun once every 700 Earth years, scientists said. (Pluto completes one lap around the sun every 248 Earth years.)

"The icy worlds beyond Neptune trace how the giant planets formed and then moved out from the sun," discovery team member Michele Bannister, of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, said in a statement. "They let us piece together the history of our solar system."

...

The exact size of 2015 RR245 is not yet known, but the researchers think it's about 435 miles (700 kilometers) wide. Pluto is the largest resident of the Kuiper Belt, with a diameter of 1,474 miles (2,371 km).

The research team first spotted 2015 RR245 in February of this year, while poring over images that the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in Hawaii took in September 2015 as part of the ongoing Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS).

"There it was on the screen — this dot of light moving so slowly that it had to be at least twice as far as Neptune from the sun," Bannister said.

Next time I have occasion to go to Wally’s I will look for either pumpkin or squash soup. I love the latter, so the former should be a shoe-in.

I’m thinking I’ll never be warm again. My hands are so cold they are almost stiff. One day we had 80 degrees and the next day it was 60. Winter is going to be really odd this year...odd and cold.

I need some fingerless gloves.

I need to vacuum the living room. Dirty people have been in here.

I’m still trying to find a time to shampoo this rug. I think I may wait until January, then do it before I go to bed and let it dry overnight. I’m tired of the grease that’s being brought in. And if the new place has carpet, I will leave this rug rolled up. Maybe enclosed in plastic.

I don’t want to give it away, just in case I can buy a place of my own. Maybe.

WE got our carpets cleaned downstairs in June when we changed the furniture.

My choir is learning a new song for Advent. It starts with, “Hoy nos encienda una llama,” which, in the context of the Advent wreath, means, “Today a flame is kindled for us.” However, it also means, “Today we set a llama on fire.”

Yep, the last translation is the one I got. Rudimentary Spanish is pretty funny at times.

And now, I’m going to bed. I will need to get that prescription in the morning.

I hope I warm up between now and then...

Apparently “llama” is also the word for “flame,” although I didn’t know it until yesterday, when the Ecuadorian ladies, Ruth and Rocio, and I started snickering at “Today we set a llama on fire.”

I just finished watching Senator Ben Sasse give a rousing, stemwinder of a speech for the BKO event at the Federalist Society.

Look at all that FLOOF!! Whoa! How cuddly can that be?

Good morning, T-c. It’s 46 degrees here. I want summer.

I dreamed I was in a car accident. I hate when I do that. Someone backed into me when I was backing out. I was driving the first car I owned after I got divorced. Long since in the scrap heap. Looking back, I have no idea why that thing didn’t just fall apart while I was driving it, but it held together as long as my son and I were in it.

I sold it and within a couple of days, the guy who bought it wrecked it. That was not kind of him.

The good thing about a picture of a kitten is that it doesn’t shed all over you!

Good morning. 46 here, too, and a high of 68 expected. We’re trying to sort out the schedule for today. DP wants to go to the gym, I have choir, and Tom *sigh* is supposed to take Pat and James to work on someone’s Eagle Scout project.

I just checked the temp and it’s now 40. I was going to try and get the prescription, but it’s too cold and probably would be a wasted trip.

So I’ll just go have a breathing treatment, instead.

It’s supposed to be close to 70 today, but it better hurry and start warming up or it will never make it. Charlie will have to bundle up to do his walk today, for sure.

That looks like an Akita pup. A dog I would love to have.

Dang. I need to get some fingerless gloves. My hands are freezing. I need a fleece vest, too, and some longjohns. Otherwise, I’m going to be wrapped in so many layers my thighs won’t know each other.

It’s a lot colder than it was this time last year. It’s going to be hard for me to function. My nose is burning and I haven’t even been outside. (You’d think, 47 years after the car accident, I’d be healed completely, but the scars in my nose burn when the weather is cold.)

Have I ever told you how much I like the heat?
