Pluto isn't quite as lonely as scientists had thought.
Astronomers have discovered another dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, the ring of icy objects beyond Neptune. But this newfound world, dubbed 2015 RR245, is much more distant than Pluto, orbiting the sun once every 700 Earth years, scientists said. (Pluto completes one lap around the sun every 248 Earth years.)
"The icy worlds beyond Neptune trace how the giant planets formed and then moved out from the sun," discovery team member Michele Bannister, of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, said in a statement. "They let us piece together the history of our solar system."
...
The exact size of 2015 RR245 is not yet known, but the researchers think it's about 435 miles (700 kilometers) wide. Pluto is the largest resident of the Kuiper Belt, with a diameter of 1,474 miles (2,371 km).
The research team first spotted 2015 RR245 in February of this year, while poring over images that the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in Hawaii took in September 2015 as part of the ongoing Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS).
"There it was on the screen this dot of light moving so slowly that it had to be at least twice as far as Neptune from the sun," Bannister said.

Thank you, Covenantor!
When you see how corrupting this tiny amount of power is do you wonder at what happens to the people we send to Warshington?
Thanks, Bob. I’m off work today.
I suppose I am technically a veteran, having manned a satellite control center for 4 years during the cold war (testing its software) but I have a hard time putting myself in the class this day is meant to remember.
They are most worthy human beings and I hope they will now start getting the care and respect they deserve from all Americans, but from our government, too.
Good point.
I’ll go comb my hair so it doesn’t show.
And I didn’t give any details on this thing. *sheesh*
Details aren’t really necessary.
This post is long. Most of you won’t read it. Apologies.
The one time in my life (I hope) I had a house custom built there was only one lot in the neighborhood we could build it on. It was over-sized so we paid a little extra for it but we wanted the house.
Then we found out we would have to pay the extra percent in neighborhood dues.
I went to a neighborhood association meeting and pointed out that we got no extra services. They said that oversized lots meant fewer dues-paying people. I said there were only 6 such lots and they were running a surplus. They said they couldn’t expect a surplus forever. I asked if I could have the extra percent in usage tags for the neighborhood pool. They said no and voted to keep the fee structrue.
There wasn’t any neighbor in the neighborhood association. There was just the power to have more money to manage.
I was going to sue on the definition of lot in the neighborhood rules but we had to move so I let the next buyers deal with it.
While all this was going on there was a different neighborhood association that got a female senior kicked out of her house for not paying dues. The house was picked up for a song at auction by a person who turned out to be a relative of the neighborhood association president. The local talk radio station picked it up and had a field day. The woman got her house and money back and I think someone went to jail.
All this to say it doesn’t take much power to corrupt people significantly.
Oh, and have you and Zeke been on talk radio? Find the Rush station and call one of the hosts at a different hour.
I’m thinking, if this turns into the free-for-all I think it will be, Zeke will be contacting at least one of the local TV channels as well as the paper, and housing doesn’t want publicity.
Within the last 18 months, the head honcho was “dismissed” for embezzling $1.5 million. It was in the papers and has never been forgotten by the locals. It won’t take much for them to demand another audit.
Noon, folks! Frank was poorly last night (fever, headache) and is still not well today. I gave him some medicine at breakfast time, and he went back to bed. At least he hasn’t thrown up. Bill took Elen to school on his way to work, but I have to go get her in a few minutes. I always forget to tell Tom to pick her up on Fridays. After that, I’ll probably take James for his Constitutional; with Frank ill, I don’t want to be at the gym a couple of hours.
The second baby mouse died.
Poor Frank. I hope he recovers soon.
Buh-bye mousies! No mousie-eating kittehs where you are, now.
I’m going out to the ramada and see what’s happening. Some people here need to be beach-slapped. One of Zeke’s “friends” send him a text that basically tells him to stuff it.
Gr-r-r-r-r...
Warm outside. I’m going to take a shower now.
This has been such a strange day.
I’m still wondering what I’m doing. I started looking for a book of knitting patterns, and I think the darn thing is in the coat closet, in one of the boxes in there. I want to show a pattern for an Aran patterned coat that I tried to make to the peeps. One of the gals thinks I’m too stupid to know anything about that stuff.
HAH!
I keep thinking I want to go to bed early, but I suspect once I get into bed, I won’t be able to choose when I want the Evil Sleeps to overtake me. After the schedule I’ve been on, my body is rebelling. I hate when it does this.
Now, I have to stick to my schedule and diet until I head for Cabot. Otherwise, I will have a nasty relapse. No thanks.
I found the bag with my cross-stitch supplies and sewed a little.
I’m almost ready to call it a day.
I’m out of coffee and creamer and running low on crackers and cheese, all of which rank right up there with yogurt and rice pudding, the former of which, I’m running low on again. I’m just trying to lose weight... Not happy.
Zeke has a stalker. Several people have tried to tell him to file a formal complaint against her, but he keeps putting it off. I’m hoping, after the meeting, yesterday, that he finally gets the hint. He said he would sign a complaint, so I’m encouraging him to draft a letter and let him know I will be more than happy to type it and print it at no charge, just to see that she leaves him alone. (He normally pays me $1 a sheet so I can accumulate enough to buy more ink.)
She can’t believe that he doesn’t “love her,” and her entire life here is fixated on telling everyone she knows about his “bad treatment” of her. She forced herself into his life, and when he was done with her, he was done. But she isn’t done with him. She’s 80 years old, fercryinoutloud!
No one can talk any sense into her. She wants him, and if she can’t have him, she will ruin him. If I live to be 100, I will never, ever understand women.
I wish I could see to do that cross-stitch stuff, but I need a magnifying glass and a brighter light. I have two projects I would really love to work on.
Never understand men, either. He got involved with her, dumped her, and expected her to become impersonally civil? When I’m 80, I’ll just have cats! Or maybe fish.
I found several pictures I’d started at some time in the past. The one I worked on today is a Clouded Leopard.
Dragonbaby just pooped on Vlad. He asked for it!
Well...
Don’t know if I have a follow-up for dragon crap.. ;-)
I’m off to get my stuff together for the Prison Ministry Retreat this weekend. I may or may not pop in from my smortphome..
Best wishes to your retreat team and all the retreatants! Try not to eat too many desserts; you might get giddy.
At least it’s not the end that breathes fire.
