New Dwarf Planet Discovered Far Beyond Pluto's Orbit

Pluto isn't quite as lonely as scientists had thought.

Astronomers have discovered another dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, the ring of icy objects beyond Neptune. But this newfound world, dubbed 2015 RR245, is much more distant than Pluto, orbiting the sun once every 700 Earth years, scientists said. (Pluto completes one lap around the sun every 248 Earth years.)

"The icy worlds beyond Neptune trace how the giant planets formed and then moved out from the sun," discovery team member Michele Bannister, of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, said in a statement. "They let us piece together the history of our solar system."

...

The exact size of 2015 RR245 is not yet known, but the researchers think it's about 435 miles (700 kilometers) wide. Pluto is the largest resident of the Kuiper Belt, with a diameter of 1,474 miles (2,371 km).

The research team first spotted 2015 RR245 in February of this year, while poring over images that the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in Hawaii took in September 2015 as part of the ongoing Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS).

"There it was on the screen — this dot of light moving so slowly that it had to be at least twice as far as Neptune from the sun," Bannister said.

Discovered rums other than Bacardi. Current favorite is Shellback. Strong vanilla over-tones for a white rum... Quite smoothcenough to drink straight...

That way lies madness though. I generate enough of that with my breakfast toast... So.... mixed it is...

Mine fixes everything. I don’t like it: if I do something wrong, I want to do it myself!

According to the Daily Mail, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, was a good-time girl in the 60s, and Taylor Swift may be dating again. Maybe society was better off when people could just jump in and out of bed because they were “aristocrats,” as opposed to having to be “musicians” or “reality-tv stars.”

I thought I was spell-check. Do we need to meet and sort out the parameters and perimeters of authority, Bob?

Whom are you describing as sober, sir? I hope it is my esteemed colleague NicknamedBob!

And with that, I’m taking my slightly spiffled self off to bed, remembering to Fall Back at least one clock.

Of course we need to meet, but not for that purpose.

I'm looking forward to sharing a cuppa.

I wish that little marmalade squee was here.

I wake up at 4:40 to find it’s really 3:40, and, thinking I’ll get in on the last of the “Luther” episode before “New Tricks” comes on, I find the TV is out again. The little black box is a piece of doo-doo and I’m ready to disconnect it.

I will be so glad when I get to Utah where sanity is the rule.

(The more I think of it, the more I believe I will disconnect the little black box. It’s there to prevent people from installing an illegal channel box, and in a year and 10 months, Cox will begin charging us for the thing to the tune of $2.99 a month, per TV. Actually, it’s just another way to make money. They are too greedy to let the channel thieves bypass their exorbitant prices.)

If we had a free system with pay-per-channel, it would work much differently. I heard an ad the other day on the radio (Tom was listening to Sirius Patriot on my phone) for “unbundled” cable channels, and the “amazing innovation” was that the basic package was 50 channels, after which you could buy other channels in groups of ten. This was described as, “Pay for only the channels you watch.” Buncha swindlers.

It’s a nice sunny morning here. I had to pick Sally up at church at 0700. She gets 15 minutes for a shower, and then I’ll have to make sure Bill is up in time to get to work at 8:30.

Time Warner goes Zot sometimes, too. Other times it’s our internal network, which you would think would work, given DP’s profession, but whatever.
