New Dwarf Planet Discovered Far Beyond Pluto's Orbit

Pluto isn't quite as lonely as scientists had thought.

Astronomers have discovered another dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, the ring of icy objects beyond Neptune. But this newfound world, dubbed 2015 RR245, is much more distant than Pluto, orbiting the sun once every 700 Earth years, scientists said. (Pluto completes one lap around the sun every 248 Earth years.)

"The icy worlds beyond Neptune trace how the giant planets formed and then moved out from the sun," discovery team member Michele Bannister, of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, said in a statement. "They let us piece together the history of our solar system."

...

The exact size of 2015 RR245 is not yet known, but the researchers think it's about 435 miles (700 kilometers) wide. Pluto is the largest resident of the Kuiper Belt, with a diameter of 1,474 miles (2,371 km).

The research team first spotted 2015 RR245 in February of this year, while poring over images that the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in Hawaii took in September 2015 as part of the ongoing Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS).

"There it was on the screen — this dot of light moving so slowly that it had to be at least twice as far as Neptune from the sun," Bannister said.

I’ve been walking around the neighborhood with James, but he’s on a campout this weekend, and Frank and Kathleen wanted to go to the gym.

Our forecast high is 60. How is it in the Far North, DC?

You can probably find instrumental hymns on YouTube.

"I spent an hour on the elliptical trainer."

I'll bet Johannes Kepler never had to put up with one of those.

If I had external speakers, I would use YouTube or something for the music, but the sound that comes through the laptop sounds like one of those old crystal radios. Really bad.

(Now is when I miss my big Teac.)

70 something and disgustingly sunny. How am I supposed to uphold the image of a Viking if there is no frost to coat m,y beard?

Scrape frost out of your freezer? You could get plenty in my top-loader.

He might have lived to 60 if he'd spent more time in the gym.

My laptop is driving me nuts again, and I’m depressed because I couldn’t wash the truck or go buy a cheeseburger, so I’m going to go lie down and watch TV and otherwise occupy myself so I don’t have to think. My daughter was going to come over but she “forgot.” Which happens a lot.

Some things are just not worth thinking about.

So I will mentally tear my hair out and scream. Not necessarily in that order.

(A glass of Pink Drink would help, but oh well.)

Shellback rum and Orcs Vs Humans

Oh, you mean a movie I thought it was just your life!

DP and three boys are on a campout this weekend. Sally's at an overnight at church with the teen choir; they plan on a fire, too. Kathleen has a cold, and Frank was up late last night, they've both gone to bed already.

I may refill my wine glass and go over to the Daily Mail to rot my brain with some celebrity gossip.

Next summer, I’m hoping to install a 5000W Bose Roommatch line-array sound system in the High School auditorium as part of a theatrical rebuild project...

It oughta be amazing.

I’m fond of that beverage, myself. With lemon!

If you have anything scheduled tomorrow, you’ll get there early.

Me, too. I keep the clock by my bed about 10 minutes fast. I’ll be early for my own funeral.
