New Dwarf Planet Discovered Far Beyond Pluto's Orbit

Pluto isn't quite as lonely as scientists had thought.

Astronomers have discovered another dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, the ring of icy objects beyond Neptune. But this newfound world, dubbed 2015 RR245, is much more distant than Pluto, orbiting the sun once every 700 Earth years, scientists said. (Pluto completes one lap around the sun every 248 Earth years.)

"The icy worlds beyond Neptune trace how the giant planets formed and then moved out from the sun," discovery team member Michele Bannister, of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, said in a statement. "They let us piece together the history of our solar system."

...

The exact size of 2015 RR245 is not yet known, but the researchers think it's about 435 miles (700 kilometers) wide. Pluto is the largest resident of the Kuiper Belt, with a diameter of 1,474 miles (2,371 km).

The research team first spotted 2015 RR245 in February of this year, while poring over images that the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in Hawaii took in September 2015 as part of the ongoing Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS).

"There it was on the screen — this dot of light moving so slowly that it had to be at least twice as far as Neptune from the sun," Bannister said.

At the worst, January will be cold, and windy, but not necessarily snowy or rainy, and the worst about it would be the black ice in the Slot Canyon.

So I’ll just hang tough. And wish for a libation.

“If you throw a dart at a number line, your chance of hitting a rational number is zero,” says Pat. I’m not sure whether this reflects mathematical philosophy or poor hand-eye coordination.

It's the same as rotating a line to form a plane, then throwing a dart at the plane. Your chance of hitting the original line in the plane is infinitesimally small.

But that's not the point. The point is that a number line contains an infinite number of infinities.

There are enough mathematical points to enumerate every photon and quark in the Universe, and even the Multiverse.

But who has Time for that?

I think Pat does.

Maybe we can put Hillary in the Big House and give her the task.

That is often a kitteh’s thoughts. I know...I have been bitten and/or swatted at when filling a food dish!

I slept in, darn it, now I need to go squeeze a bunch of events together so I have the rest of the morning to concentrate on those things that are really important.

I think that’s exactly where Hillary is going, if the few conservative posts on FB are true. She definitely isn’t going into the White House. Even the media are turning tail.

I slept in, too (6:30). I’ve been to Walmart, after cleaning up the refrigerator to see what we already had.

I have time to plan next week’s Sunday School lesson before lunch. James and I are going to the dentist this afternoon. I need a filling, and he has a snaggletooth coming in where he should have a standard incisor. I imagine it will require a cap eventually. He’s always had weird dentition.

I checked my fridge and it mostly had bottled water in it. Truth.

Today, if the weather cooperates, I’ll try to pin out the dress. The brain may need to be adjusted, as well, before I start the job, since I have to arrange the fabric separately for each side (front and back) since the skirt is slightly flared. I don’t know if I’m up to it, mentally.

It’s for sure, I will have to cut each piece separately, rather than cut them all in one swell foop. ;o] (My mother seems to be here, today...)

I hope James’ dental problems can be fixed early.

My mother had seven children, and I was the only one with “perfect” teeth. A dental tech did a panoramic x-ray back when we lived in Olympia and commented on the good job the orthodontist did on my teeth. I told her it was natural, but I don’t think she believed me. My dad’s teeth were the same way.

My siblings all had to have dental work done at one time or another in their lives. Me? I took Lexapro and it softened my teeth and they began to break. So now, I need to have most of them extracted. :o[
