New Dwarf Planet Discovered Far Beyond Pluto's Orbit

Pluto isn't quite as lonely as scientists had thought.

Astronomers have discovered another dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, the ring of icy objects beyond Neptune. But this newfound world, dubbed 2015 RR245, is much more distant than Pluto, orbiting the sun once every 700 Earth years, scientists said. (Pluto completes one lap around the sun every 248 Earth years.)

"The icy worlds beyond Neptune trace how the giant planets formed and then moved out from the sun," discovery team member Michele Bannister, of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, said in a statement. "They let us piece together the history of our solar system."

...

The exact size of 2015 RR245 is not yet known, but the researchers think it's about 435 miles (700 kilometers) wide. Pluto is the largest resident of the Kuiper Belt, with a diameter of 1,474 miles (2,371 km).

The research team first spotted 2015 RR245 in February of this year, while poring over images that the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in Hawaii took in September 2015 as part of the ongoing Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS).

"There it was on the screen — this dot of light moving so slowly that it had to be at least twice as far as Neptune from the sun," Bannister said.

No kidding.

Now I have to go to Walmart. Why do I always have to go to Walmart?

I thought you went to Walmart to escape the offspring, but then I remembered that they often go with you to make sure the cost is artificially high because of their surprise purchases.

I like Glads too, but they’re more work since you need to dig ‘em up in the fall while the iris is perfectly happy of stay in the ground. I like dahlias too but same deal, gotta dig ‘em up here.

My Grandmother had all of the above and a bunch of other growing flowery thingies, some of which my baby Sis ‘collected’ samples of before the property was sold. Because she did that, I now have some of Grandma’s growing things here.

The path back to the chicken coop was lined with iris and glads. Her dahlias were in another bed by the garage. All of her flowers are now gone, as is her house and 2/3 of the garage (the newest addition built by my Grandfather when Grandma got her drivers license when I was in high school is still standing.) The walnut and butternut trees are gone and the mulberry trees are too. So is the grape arbor with its four types of grapes, and I have to assume that the asparagus patch and the rhubarb are also gone. It looks as if the new owner of the property doesn’t even have a garden or at least one that is visible from satellite..

The only time I planted anything (or wanted to, or had the room to) was when we lived in the Bay Area of CA. We put down sod, had nine rose bushes, the flagstones were surrounded by Scotch moss, and there were bachelor’s buttons. When we moved, it stayed and I’ve never had the nerve to plant since then.

There are several iris plants along the north side of the patio here, and they are beautiful when they bloom, but I have no idea how to handle them. And besides: I’m moving again in the spring. I will have to see what the new place has for a “yard” and patio before I get too excited.

DJ MacWow told me how to make roses grow in pots, but I could never get the pots, the soil and the bushes at the same time. I’ve regretted that ever since.

How is it after 5:00 and I’ve only made one post? Talk about a waste of a day doing work.

Oh, well, I can try again tomorrow.

Evening. Kathleen has formed a relationship with the Upnorth Dog next door. She’s decided his name is Scout, although I think her name is Chloe or Phoebe. Anyway, it says Woof, in a deep, hound voice.

DP is taking most of the people to the gym again tonight, and I’m going to church again because of the bilingual supplemental sacrament class members will be confessing. All I have to do is be there, smile, and say, “There, there, dear.” I’ll take a book; I have a new one about Aaron Burr out of the library. He’s fascinating.

Tomorrow you have to do it all over again. It’s almost like there’s entropy.

Tomorrow we’ll get more packages, and we’ll deliver more packages.

It’s like Christmas every day!

Well. I’m here, but why?

I slept in and as a result, my speller’s busted. My brain works, but by the time it gets to my fingertips, it’s unrecognizable. I spend an awful lot of time making corrections. *sigh*

Good morning! I’ve been “sleeping in” until after 6:00 recently, instead of being up promptly at 5:00. I think this is good: it means I’m less agitated.

I am here. For those who saw this news, the fire in the Upper East was close enough to smell, but about 4 blocks away. I am praying for the one person in critical condition and the many who have lost their homes.

Oh, man. That is scary. Yes, they need prayers to help adjust and get their lives back in order.

With me, sleeping in means I’ve pushed myself for too long on too little sleep. My body just quits.

It’s very good that you are less agitated. Hopefully, that condition will be permanent.

I took the trash out and when I came back in, the computer was on the boot-up stage. Maybe this is the week to change the OS. Gr-r-r-r-r!

Terrible news about the fire. Offspring are turning up: Bill, Pat, Frank ...

I’m going to get dressed. Later I’ll have to go to Walmart again: we need to take some candy and a snack to the Cub Scouts Hallowe’en party tonight. I told the kids I’m not getting any additional costumes: they can make do or make up something from what we’ve already got. I’ll probably wear my Administrative Witch Played By Judi Dench outfit again, but I need to hide the shoes before Sally gets them.
