Pluto isn't quite as lonely as scientists had thought.
Astronomers have discovered another dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, the ring of icy objects beyond Neptune. But this newfound world, dubbed 2015 RR245, is much more distant than Pluto, orbiting the sun once every 700 Earth years, scientists said. (Pluto completes one lap around the sun every 248 Earth years.)
"The icy worlds beyond Neptune trace how the giant planets formed and then moved out from the sun," discovery team member Michele Bannister, of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, said in a statement. "They let us piece together the history of our solar system."
...
The exact size of 2015 RR245 is not yet known, but the researchers think it's about 435 miles (700 kilometers) wide. Pluto is the largest resident of the Kuiper Belt, with a diameter of 1,474 miles (2,371 km).
The research team first spotted 2015 RR245 in February of this year, while poring over images that the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in Hawaii took in September 2015 as part of the ongoing Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS).
"There it was on the screen this dot of light moving so slowly that it had to be at least twice as far as Neptune from the sun," Bannister said.

I would have found that charming, except for the tambourine and the singing.
They’re supposed to get up when the pleasant voice says, “Good morning, everyone: rise and shine!”
It takes forever for them to learn that the pleasant voice does not respond to a snooze request.
The pleasant voice doesn’t always come back with a tambourine. Sometimes it comes back with a drum, or a spray bottle of cold water.
I never cared for snooze alarms myself.
When I was in college, I had a wind-up alarm clock on the far side of the room, so I had to get out of bed to shut it off.
Back from the lab. Someone took my parking spot while I was gone. I hate when that happens.
I should know some time tomorrow if I have West Nile virus or not. It will be a relief to find out. The lab is open M-F at 0400, so I think next time, I’ll get my appointment for 0430.
Now, how do I start my day? It seems I’m late for everything. The drive was quite nice, as there were relatively few cars on the freeway. And the construction on Flamingo Road is done, so even that was pleasant, compared to the last time I drove on it when it was under construction.
When I was in the Army, I had an alarm wristwatch. One weekends, when I didn’t have to get up early, the watch sat on my nightstand, with the alarm turned off.
But when the setting position came around to the right time for the alarm, the watch made a soft click as the detent fell into its slot.
That would wake me up.
I use my phone for my alarm. Though I rarely sleep long enough for it to sound. I set it, “just in case,” but I would really be fumbling if I had to shut it off...
When I was married I always used a wind up alarm, as I hated the idea of a power failure making my husband late for work.
You’re much nicer than I am. At this time of year I tend to start screaming, “Don’t let them get upstairs to eat the children!!!”
Oooooooh, good one!
Progress is Being Made here. I’ll leave for my prayer group in about 45 minutes. Maybe I’ll vacuum some things before I go. It’s difficult to find a good time to vacuum, because it disturbs the cats.
I just brought in a tub and the newspapers and will see what kind of knick-knacks and scarcities I can pack up today. I’m hoping one tub will handle the stuff. And if I feel up to it, I will build a book box.
:o])
My hibiscus tea is brewing, and will soon go into the fridge. And I will make up my order for iherb, so all I have to do once I get paid is send the order in. It’s much easier that way.
The second power cord also works, but the prongs don’t fold into the wall unit, so I’m leaning toward the variable charger.
Ooohhh, ArGee, that is EXCELLENT!!!
*pant-pant*
I shouldn’t be out of breath (I think) but my lungs tell me I’ve done a good days’ work. I got one Sterlite tub packed and tomorrow, if all goes well, I will pack up another, and then I will wait for next week. This person needs to recuperate.
It went fairly well, actually. I probably need to mark the tubs and contents in a small notebook, as I did in TX when I was moving back. At least then I will know which tubs to look in when I want something.
Pest control is supposed to come today, but so far, no one has shown up, and they are usually here shortly after 0800. However, the ramada calls, and I must go, for my peeps await my wisdom. *ha-ha*
:D
That is how the next generation of Cartoonists are created.
“WAKEY ,WAKEY, RISE and SHINE ! SUNS BURNING YOUR EYES OUT! “
Curtains Flung open with as must dramatic effect as possible...
Then wonder why offspring is a complete a-hole for the rest of the day.
What’s that I see?
GAAAAAH! I’m up already!
LoL.
IF only it where that easy...
