New Dwarf Planet Discovered Far Beyond Pluto's Orbit

Pluto isn't quite as lonely as scientists had thought.

Astronomers have discovered another dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, the ring of icy objects beyond Neptune. But this newfound world, dubbed 2015 RR245, is much more distant than Pluto, orbiting the sun once every 700 Earth years, scientists said. (Pluto completes one lap around the sun every 248 Earth years.)

"The icy worlds beyond Neptune trace how the giant planets formed and then moved out from the sun," discovery team member Michele Bannister, of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, said in a statement. "They let us piece together the history of our solar system."

...

The exact size of 2015 RR245 is not yet known, but the researchers think it's about 435 miles (700 kilometers) wide. Pluto is the largest resident of the Kuiper Belt, with a diameter of 1,474 miles (2,371 km).

The research team first spotted 2015 RR245 in February of this year, while poring over images that the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in Hawaii took in September 2015 as part of the ongoing Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS).

"There it was on the screen — this dot of light moving so slowly that it had to be at least twice as far as Neptune from the sun," Bannister said.

Dr. Coleman, who is self-deprecating as well as sharp and stylish, would laugh at that. (He’s being overly modest: his degrees are Big Time. I don’t know why he’s doing psychiatry at a public hospital in Charlotte; maybe he’s got family in the area or something.)

Sally is a 5’9” blonde goddess. She looks stuning in her costumes. She’d look stuning in normal clothes if she wore normal clothes instead of grunge rags.

There was a young lady being Belle, having her picture taken with children at the Lake Park festival. She seemed to be associated with the promotion of a new dentist in the area. One of my church friends has a daughter who does princess birthday parties for a modest income supplement.

"Sally had her psychiatrist appointment this afternoon, and she’s off all the medications. The sharp and stylish Dr. Coleman said, "It was nice knowing you," ..."

Hah! He only thinks he knows her.

I told him, “I can’t exactly say it’s been a pleasure, but you know, sorta.” He said, “I know what you mean. When I saw your name on the appointment schedule, I thought, ‘This will be fun.’ “

Squee! I need lots of squee today, I think. I’m still hungover from yesterday. I was totally worthless when I got home.

I just got back from turning in my prescription, and picking up the one for my neck and I’m waiting for the pain killer to kick in. (Which sounds worse for public eyes and ears: “morphine” or “pain killer?”) For the first time, I hit all the lights red. Both directions. Wassupwithat?

Now, I need to go have a steroid treatment and start my day for real.

Hang on, just like Stripy Kitten is!

The hawk was back in our yard this morning. Puts Tom the Mocker in his place!

If I didn’t have the innate faith in my future, and what it holds for me, plus the amount and type of reading I’m doing on a daily basis, I think “hanging on” would be a nebulous concept, at best.

We have a red-tailed hawk in one of the palm trees, and it’s big enough that other birds don’t hang around when he is here. He’s more interested in the small nervous rats their owners call “dogs” and will swoop down and take one of those or a feral cat in a heartbeat.

I was concerned about our cats when I first saw the hawk, but they’ve been inside when he’s around.

Hawks probably won’t try a cat in a back yard because of the natural unpredictable movements of humans. That hawk you see may be the cause of the rabbits’ demises, and as long as the rabbits are abundant, the cats are fairly safe. Jake could be a potential victim, as he likes to go ‘splorin’ but I think Shannon isn’t quite as venturous.

Time to start my day. Yay. It’s getting light out and is quite cool, at 58, SE @ 4 mph, and 19%. It’s only supposed to be 80 today, and I’m not dressed for it. I had to throw out another pair of my winter pants, and that leaves me with summer clothes to wear. My thin blood does not like that.

Nah, Jake killed the rabbits. I caught him in the act. A hawk would fly off with the corpses, rather that eating their heads off and leaving the rest in a neat row.

We have another day in the 80s planned, but it’s supposed to turn tomorrow, rain followed by much cooler temps.

I believe that is correct! LOL!

And the DMV sticker came yesterday, so I’m legal for as long as I live here...another five months?
