Pluto isn't quite as lonely as scientists had thought.
Astronomers have discovered another dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, the ring of icy objects beyond Neptune. But this newfound world, dubbed 2015 RR245, is much more distant than Pluto, orbiting the sun once every 700 Earth years, scientists said. (Pluto completes one lap around the sun every 248 Earth years.)
"The icy worlds beyond Neptune trace how the giant planets formed and then moved out from the sun," discovery team member Michele Bannister, of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, said in a statement. "They let us piece together the history of our solar system."
...
The exact size of 2015 RR245 is not yet known, but the researchers think it's about 435 miles (700 kilometers) wide. Pluto is the largest resident of the Kuiper Belt, with a diameter of 1,474 miles (2,371 km).
The research team first spotted 2015 RR245 in February of this year, while poring over images that the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in Hawaii took in September 2015 as part of the ongoing Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS).
"There it was on the screen this dot of light moving so slowly that it had to be at least twice as far as Neptune from the sun," Bannister said.

I’m thinking a Kettleclass might be a good way to remove the low-information voters from the US rolls.
Have either of you tested the latest Honda Civic? Very nice.
The Diesel is a catastrophic disappointment but the petrol models are great.
I’m driving a 2003 Ford Escape with about 212,000 miles on it. When it dies I’ll start test driving cars.
I just found out via FB that my son is in the hospital, having surgery for kidney stones. His wife didn’t tell me because she “didn’t think it was important.”
This, of course, is the same gal whom, two months after she married my son called and had the following conversation with me:
Wife: Do you have any life insurance?
MiL: No, I can’t seem to fit it into my budget. Why?
Wife: We don’t want you to die and leave us stuck with the funeral expenses.
She proceded to contact an insurance agency, who contacted me, and consequently, sent a nurse out to give me a physical. The result? Two-fold, actually.
1) They turned me down because of CFIDS, which people NEVER die from, and
2) I now cannot get ANY insurance, including those that say there is no physical required.
She is such a gem.
That looks like some of the stuff Igor would bring home. The one about the swing is priceless: What the client wanted was a rope swing on a tree branch. It went through several steps, with illustrations for each one, and the finished project, “What the client got,” was a rope tied to two branches on opposite sides of the tree with the seat about halfway up the trunk. Yah.
So I laughed at your funny!
Epic Fail would need to take the roof off, too.
Dad bought this BMW when my brother lived in Europe and had it shipped from the factor. He loved it. When he couldn’t drive anymore, Mom drove it from Florida to Pennsylvania and left it with my brother. However, it’s no good in ice and snow - also, he’s a bit large for it - so it sat in his garage most of the time. He drove it down here at the end of June and signed it over to Bill, who needed his own car by the first of July (or he’d be walking).
He parks it on the curb in front of our house, which you can do around here. It’s officially against the HOA rules, but so many people do it now that if they tried any “enforcement” other than an occasional nagging letter, we’d all vote the board out and change the bylaws. There are more adults per house than there were 15, and therefore more vehicles.
Oh, sorry to hear that! I hope the surgery goes well. I hear kidney stones are extremely painful. Maybe his wife will get them someday.
Ouch !
“There is nowt as queer as folk.”
Coulda been worse. They coulda been government employees doing the work.
#CFIDSLivesMatter
Just sayin’.
So, are you preparng for the visit of the young Matthew?
Or is he not going to drop by this time up the coast?
Currently, the forecast says it will rain all day Saturday and probably be rather windy. A minor nuisance is all. I’m driving all my choir members to the Diocese of Charlotte Spanish Music Ministries Get-Together. Pick up Asuncion in Monroe at 8:00, pick up Rafaela in Hemby Bridge at 8:15, pick up the rest at the church at 8:30, and be at St. Gabriel’s in the Much Better part of the city at 9:00.
If it’s pouring, I’ll wear something that dries out quickly and take a sweatshirt.
How many cats does it take to change a lightbulb?
26.
1 to help you at the top of the ladder and 25 to curl around your legs and try to kill you at the bottom.
They can see in the dark, anyway.
Fun on a long wet drive.
Ask your audience this question:
If a farmer has twenty sick sheep, and one of them dies, how many are left?
Unless you actually put a hard break between sick and sheep, everyone will hear twenty-six sheep. They’ll answer with 25 and you can say, “No, try again.”
Go ahead and say it out loud. We won’t mind. It is a real stumper.
He’s had kidney stones before but like his dad, he can’t seem to leave milk and cheese alone. Too bad he didn’t get that particular system from my side of the family.
I don’t even try to tell him anything any more because his wife is so much smarter than I am, dontchaknow. I can only forgive her. My son? I’m his mother and he pretty much ignores me until I remind him how long it’s been since we actually talked on the phone, or had a conversation on something besides a FB pic posted to everyone who wants to look.
That’s OK. Maybe some day, he will see the arrow of his ways... ;o]
I just made some sourdough starter to help me burn off some frustration. Of course, as cool as the weather is now, it will be a few days before it begins to bubble up real well. Me? I’m not having any trouble with bubbling up.
(Now I wish I had remembered to get some white Pink Drink, this morning.)
