Pluto isn't quite as lonely as scientists had thought.
Astronomers have discovered another dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, the ring of icy objects beyond Neptune. But this newfound world, dubbed 2015 RR245, is much more distant than Pluto, orbiting the sun once every 700 Earth years, scientists said. (Pluto completes one lap around the sun every 248 Earth years.)
"The icy worlds beyond Neptune trace how the giant planets formed and then moved out from the sun," discovery team member Michele Bannister, of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, said in a statement. "They let us piece together the history of our solar system."
...
The exact size of 2015 RR245 is not yet known, but the researchers think it's about 435 miles (700 kilometers) wide. Pluto is the largest resident of the Kuiper Belt, with a diameter of 1,474 miles (2,371 km).
The research team first spotted 2015 RR245 in February of this year, while poring over images that the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in Hawaii took in September 2015 as part of the ongoing Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS).
"There it was on the screen this dot of light moving so slowly that it had to be at least twice as far as Neptune from the sun," Bannister said.

Anoreth has a lively life. If she ends up with dementia in old age, it might be genetic. Frank can take care of both of us!
Zeke has a lot of trouble with his car, so I’m not going to worry. I don’t think I’m feeling well enough to go, anyway.
It sounds like you still don’t have any sandwich meat! I did that with a large beef roast in Germany, once. We came back from the commissary, and unloaded the groceries, and a day or two later, I was looking for the meat, to no avail.
A day or two after that, I was going to go in to the Kassern and smelled something awful. It took quite a search. That hugh roast had been packed on the top of the bag (paper bags) and had fallen into the wheel well in the trunk when I turned a corner.
Yah. I know what that’s like...
I went to Missouri with Dad once, and when we got there, we found a fuse had blown and the freezer full of deer meat shut off. Dad had to bury it all.
Our meat was in sealed packages, at least, and no doubt full of preservatives. We have some salami, but I don’t like that. I’ll go to Walmart tomorrow and make sure I check the back of the van after the kids tell me they brought everything in.
Yep. And before that, that same husband shut off all the appliances just before we went on leave for two weeks. In July. In Yuma Az. He was going to save money on the power.
Sigh.
Your first husband, right? Sounds like he wasn’t all that bright.
It would be great fun to stay and enjoy the ship but since have retired ... There is no time?!? Dang ... May have to go back to work so can take a break! {{{HUGS}}} everyone.
Hi! Retired people are SO busy! My mother never has a minute, what with cruises down the Seine and stuff.
Hope you and the family are well!
Prayers for Anoreth.
Thanks! It surely can’t hurt. If she wasn’t well enough for work, she’d have to see a medical-person of some kind, so it’s under control one way or another.
I hear that Wednesday will be a good day to stay far away from the area that once held Shea Stadium. It is rumored that a former occupant of the Polo Grounds will be visiting another former occupant of the Polo Grounds for some playoff festivities...
The former residents of Ebbets Field on the other hand will be staying out west.
And the occupants of that place up in the Bronx are going home for the winter. It’s time for any Yankee fans to root for Cleveland (since I can’t picture any Yankee fan rooting for the Red Sox... ;-)
We don’t own a thing that hasn’t been—never mind.
Most of the time the cats here yak their furballs onto the wood floor. You know, to test the polyurethane varnish.
But every once in a while they find the carpeted spots.
Or my slipper.
Why does this remind me of J Random Freeper? RIP, Johnny.
We've got snow.
Eeep! In a club or by a club?
In a club.
I was thinking of him recently, too.
Yow. Hope it’s mild and she recovers quickly.
