Pluto isn't quite as lonely as scientists had thought.
Astronomers have discovered another dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, the ring of icy objects beyond Neptune. But this newfound world, dubbed 2015 RR245, is much more distant than Pluto, orbiting the sun once every 700 Earth years, scientists said. (Pluto completes one lap around the sun every 248 Earth years.)
"The icy worlds beyond Neptune trace how the giant planets formed and then moved out from the sun," discovery team member Michele Bannister, of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, said in a statement. "They let us piece together the history of our solar system."
...
The exact size of 2015 RR245 is not yet known, but the researchers think it's about 435 miles (700 kilometers) wide. Pluto is the largest resident of the Kuiper Belt, with a diameter of 1,474 miles (2,371 km).
The research team first spotted 2015 RR245 in February of this year, while poring over images that the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in Hawaii took in September 2015 as part of the ongoing Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS).
"There it was on the screen this dot of light moving so slowly that it had to be at least twice as far as Neptune from the sun," Bannister said.

I’m surprised that more people don’t know the complete statement of his law. They usually only recite the last part..
You mean the part that goes “Murphy was an optimist?”
Not exactly, but that probably is a good summation. The complete statement of Mr. Murphy’s famous law follows..
Nothing is as easy as you think, everything takes longer than you estimate, and if anything can go wrong it will. At the worst possible moment.
It is accepted as axiomatic requiring no proof...
Yes, many of the rest of the pieces are just embellishments.
For example: Interchangeable parts, won’t.
The greater the value of the rug, the greater the probability that the cat will throw up on it.
I haven’t read this in any list, but I’ve noticed the longer you spend testing your new software the more obvious the bug the users will find.
I think we can now add:
The more obvious the case for a Republican President the worse the field of candidates will be.
Wow! Two night owls and no cat.
I think I’m in the wrong dream.
If only it were a dream.
Mr. Murphy did indeed drop by, but he only sprinkled a little of his trouble so I shouldn’t be here too late this morning.
I’m thinking that cat is thinking ...
Wait for it, dog. Waiiiiiiit for it!
Good morning!
Slow morning here so far. Only one cat has turned up, and of nine resident Offspring, only Bill the Son, who has to be at work soon.
That’s cute! I needed that for sure! Thanks! And good morning.
I’ve had my shower, and taken out the trash, put the hibiscus tea on to steep and will go have another breathing treatment in a few. The fever was pretty high (for me) last night, so I was pretty much out of it. CFIDS. Sucks.
I will do what I can this morning, and take it easy the rest of the day. I don’t have much choice. I forgot what it was like to have more than a minor relapse.
Hang in there, ArGee! *hug*
Hello! I’m very sorry that you’re poorly today. I’m going to have a shower soon, I think. Depends on how many kids turn up before I finish eating breakfast.
I showed up but I don’t know why. Oh. Yes. I have to go unlock in less than an hour. Hah.
Now, for a cuppa, and then some reading. Oh. And another breathing treatment. My feet are still swollen.
James and Frank: the brothers most interested in eating!
Thanks, but it’s a passing thing. I never know how long it will last or how severe (or mild) it will be, but I know that eventually, I’ll get back to my normal.
I’m sleepy. I will read a bit, then have another breathing treatment (Steroid, this time) and see how I feel after that.
Then Conference again at 0900 for two hours, then a two hour break, then two more hours, then not again until April of 2017.
Which is closer than we think!
We have a pro-life demonstration at 12:30, followed by Mass at 2:00. I should start warming up my voice; it hasn't been all that great since I had the cold in August.
