New Dwarf Planet Discovered Far Beyond Pluto's Orbit
space.com ^ | 07/11/2016

Pluto isn't quite as lonely as scientists had thought.

Astronomers have discovered another dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, the ring of icy objects beyond Neptune. But this newfound world, dubbed 2015 RR245, is much more distant than Pluto, orbiting the sun once every 700 Earth years, scientists said. (Pluto completes one lap around the sun every 248 Earth years.)

"The icy worlds beyond Neptune trace how the giant planets formed and then moved out from the sun," discovery team member Michele Bannister, of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, said in a statement. "They let us piece together the history of our solar system."

...

The exact size of 2015 RR245 is not yet known, but the researchers think it's about 435 miles (700 kilometers) wide. Pluto is the largest resident of the Kuiper Belt, with a diameter of 1,474 miles (2,371 km).

The research team first spotted 2015 RR245 in February of this year, while poring over images that the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in Hawaii took in September 2015 as part of the ongoing Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS).

"There it was on the screen — this dot of light moving so slowly that it had to be at least twice as far as Neptune from the sun," Bannister said.

That’s a small Asian boy sitting on a goat. You don’t see that every day.

...on a goat with bright green panties and what appears to be lace frou-frou.

Usually small asian boys are photographed astride water buffalos shouting, " You National Geographic, take me picture", to every passing tourist with a six pack of cameras and gear around his neck.

Elvis’s maternal grandmother, Minnie Mae Hood (b. 1888) was descended from our local Mr. Hood.

I wasn't sure what to say about that.

"The adult men decided, after about a half hour of shoveling, that it wasn’t much fun, so they took up a collection and rented a power-trencher."

So the smart move was in drafting people with resources to the task, so that they could decide among themselves that there was a more efficient way to accomplish it.

Had the adult men been tasked to merely observe and be safety monitors, their resources could likely have been squandered on a surreptitious beer-run rather than a trencher.

Ingenious task-management is a sign of a good leader.

... the job would have taken forever, and the troop is leaving for summer camp tomorrow. As it is, the water pipe is laid and buried, just needs to be connected to the city water at one end and to a faucet at the other. (The father of the youth running the project is a plumber.) And the shed will be finished today: the adult men were debating a door, which apparently hadn't occurred to them earlier, when I left.

Somewhere along the story line I lost track of the Eagle Scout candidate who I thought was honchoing the endeaver. What happened to him?

>>>>> GAH! So I took the I-95 home to avoid the traffic cones and lumps in the road. <<<<

I was not informed about 1-95 being moved (extended?) to Utah. Or Nevada either, for that matter.

This may be a gamble...but I think the other poster was on to something...
it does sound like an area 51 situation.

If 6 Was 9

He was working on the shed. And other stuff, I guess. And his sister brought lunch for the crew.

I’m sure there are 95’s across the country. This one is actually I-515, but before the freeway, it was I-93-95, with the 93 splitting off to *shudder* Searchlight, and 95 going to Reno, and eventually meeting up with the 91, which is found in some places; since modernization occurred, it’s the I-15.

And I went through Area 51 before it was anything but a road through the desert on the way north.

The I-15/91 goes into Utah.

And now, I’ve thoroughly confused myself, so thus ends today’s travel history.

*whew* :wiping brow: That was hard work, trying to keep up with all that. My brain is pretty compromised by lack of sleep last night, so nothing is making much sense to me.

I think I need to go buy more ice cream and chocolate syrup. The little cups hold 100 calories and a tablespoon of syrup is perfect — 25 calories. But said purchase will have to wait. What I have left, I will use for the car wash on Monday.

Yep, pretty exhausting! The second load of laundry is on. I’d like to have a nap, but I can’t put Kathleen to bed because Pat and James are supposed to be packing for camp, so I guess I’ll just hang in until 8:30 or so.

I plan to be asleep long before 2030, and that’s the truth! I’m trying to find something to do to keep me awake until 1400.

I’d go to Wally’s, but all I want is salad. Can’t. Truck needs the bird droppings washed off.

Actually, I like to go someplace that has an excellent salad bar. Then, I’d make a salad to go and come home to eat it. And I have the perfect dressing (Litehouse Ranch,) plus enough white wine left to make a really good meal!

I wish! I’d put that Tracker into 4X4 and plow through.

(Sure I would.)

You can do that at Harris Teeter, but you don’t have those.

I put the National Review cruise on the calendar. That way, even though I can’t go on it and drink with Jonah and Kevin, I’ll remember to drink at home and read their blogs.

It may have been (I'm not certain) US 95 (not -- Interstate 95).

Ah, that must be it. I'm remembering now, driving North-South on US 95 along the California/Arizona border.

But I-15 (Interstate 15) was never Interstate 95 (I-95).

Or, we could go back to the area 51 influence, if you'd like. :^0

It does explain a lot of things...

'Face, I know I-95, premier drug corridor to New York City, and favorite of tobacco smugglers as well.

It traverses our sleepy bedroom communities here in Maryland like a double-barrelled rapier. It is not a friend of mine.

Your dubious divided highway is no I-95.

A lot of interstates ‘nominally’ follow and in some places replace old US routes. For examples (in general, not entirely exact), Interstate 95 nominally follows US 1. Interstate 80 nominally follows US 6 west of Pennsylvania (PA and east does not have a real close US6 clone in the Interstate system - especially going to Cape Cod ;-) Interstate 75 nominally follows what was US 25 - Dixie Highway...

I’m sure that out west there are other examples, but other than Houston - Galveston and around Denver I’ve never driven out there (and I flew into both places.) My year going to college in St. Paul doesn’t exactly count because the Eisenhower Interstate System was basically still in its infancy then.

I bet there is an Interstate equivalent/replacement for good ol’ US Route 66. It probably wouldn’t make for a good TV series though...

(Now to shorten about an acre and a half of Advanced Grass Substitute. ;-)
