Pluto isn't quite as lonely as scientists had thought.
Astronomers have discovered another dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, the ring of icy objects beyond Neptune. But this newfound world, dubbed 2015 RR245, is much more distant than Pluto, orbiting the sun once every 700 Earth years, scientists said. (Pluto completes one lap around the sun every 248 Earth years.)
"The icy worlds beyond Neptune trace how the giant planets formed and then moved out from the sun," discovery team member Michele Bannister, of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, said in a statement. "They let us piece together the history of our solar system."
...
The exact size of 2015 RR245 is not yet known, but the researchers think it's about 435 miles (700 kilometers) wide. Pluto is the largest resident of the Kuiper Belt, with a diameter of 1,474 miles (2,371 km).
The research team first spotted 2015 RR245 in February of this year, while poring over images that the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in Hawaii took in September 2015 as part of the ongoing Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS).
"There it was on the screen this dot of light moving so slowly that it had to be at least twice as far as Neptune from the sun," Bannister said.

No sign of the daughter and no sign of the power company, and I don’t know who to call to get some help for Samantha, even if it’s just overnight.
She’s 80+ and very fragile, and her mind is going. As I said earlier, she is half blind as well. It’s frustrating for me. Her daughter pays the bills, but Samantha writes the checks so something is going on there. We (the peeps and I) tried to tell her about paperless billing, but she won’t remember it.
And now, I’m stressed because of the frustration. I asked the office if they had battery-powered lanterns and they said no, everything was electric. I shook my finger at the head of maintenance and said, “Emergency preparedness — you’re not ready for it.”
GAH!
Couldn't find a bigger image that I could easily steal though.. ;-)
Yeah, pretty much.
Oh, dear. There’s not an emergency social services number you can call? What about her doctor?
I don’t know any of that stuff and don’t know where to look. There are several messages on her daughter’s phone from three different people, but for some reason, she is not taking the messages off.
I’m sure, when she gets the messages, she will come and get her mother for the night or however long it takes to straighten the mess out, but until then, Samantha is just sitting in a quiet dark house. If it weren’t for the lower temperatures and the wind, she would really be suffering.
Samantha is convinced her son was supposed to fly in today from Texas, but because we can’t get ahold of Stephanie, we don’t know if that’s a truth or a fiction. Since her best friend passed away several years ago, she has been pretty much a recluse. When I see Stephanie again, I will ask for her number as well as her mother’s.
And as a side note, Stephanie took her mother’s cell phone away, saying, “What do YOU need a cell phone for?” Now she knows.
I don’t know what good it would do for Samantha to have a cell phone, since nobody’s answering!
Well, there’s a good point. But at least she could, as she said, call a cab and spend the night in a motel. And have food brought in to her.
In other news, the cost of the desk is back up from the $50 off the last time I checked. *sigh* I suspect I will be seeing yo-yo prices on it for quite a while.
I think I’ve found the culprit for the vicious bites I got last week. I went in to get the bathroom ready for my morning shower, reaching for the tub mat, and was greeted by a mosquito. Where it came from, I’ll never know. But I am going to email my doctor and see if I should be tested for west Nile Virus and Zika.
It explains the multiple bites and my reaction to them, at least.
I think if you were infected by either, you’d have noticed by now.
The mob has left for the gym (Kathleen’s swimming lesson), and I’ll be leaving for a Spanish religious lecture at church in about an hour. I suppose I should get something to eat and then wash up from the mob’s meal ...
Perhaps you would have noticed before now, but my immune system is not normal and is constantly “up-regulated,” so most things are fought off before I even know I have them — like colds and flu.
I was slightly ill the second day, but that was because of more bites during the first night. The illness didn’t last, but it wasn’t pleasant. And that is why I asked her if I should come in for that.
Good point. Certainly it can’t hurt to check.
And now, I’m off to bed. I am hoping my stomach settles down before morning, and that I don’t have a repeat of the last two days.
This has not been pleasant.
So I’ll see all y’all in the morning!
Hope you have a good night!
Awww... floofy!!
I’m going to shower, then head for iHop for the second breakfast I didn’t get yesterday. ;o]
The sleeping baby is one of a little of rescue-kittens. Maybe I’ll post more later; they’re all cute.
Enjoy your Second Breakfast! I’ll have to go to Walmart once traffic clears a bit.
Morning TC
Down at Butlers Hard at the moment.
Data signal almost nil, talk later. :)
Enjoy!
All very interesting little faces! SQUEE!
