New Dwarf Planet Discovered Far Beyond Pluto's Orbit

Pluto isn't quite as lonely as scientists had thought.

Astronomers have discovered another dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, the ring of icy objects beyond Neptune. But this newfound world, dubbed 2015 RR245, is much more distant than Pluto, orbiting the sun once every 700 Earth years, scientists said. (Pluto completes one lap around the sun every 248 Earth years.)

"The icy worlds beyond Neptune trace how the giant planets formed and then moved out from the sun," discovery team member Michele Bannister, of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, said in a statement. "They let us piece together the history of our solar system."

...

The exact size of 2015 RR245 is not yet known, but the researchers think it's about 435 miles (700 kilometers) wide. Pluto is the largest resident of the Kuiper Belt, with a diameter of 1,474 miles (2,371 km).

The research team first spotted 2015 RR245 in February of this year, while poring over images that the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in Hawaii took in September 2015 as part of the ongoing Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS).

"There it was on the screen — this dot of light moving so slowly that it had to be at least twice as far as Neptune from the sun," Bannister said.

I’ll accept that statement coming from you. But if HRC said it I would double-check.

Having referenced BLM, EPA, SJB, and now HRC I formally declare today TLA day.

Just because I can.

Not that it means anything to anyone else.

BTW: I learned a new phrase yesterday for those who discuss politics in polite company.

The ship’s really gonna hit the span now.

I think that one works.

Purina cat chow is not made from cats. Supposed to be for catz.

And oddly enough, there is no mouse flavor...

LOL! Interesting comparison, Nully.

How is the house coming along? I don’t mean that literally. Just, is there progress?

Gonna take more than one drawbridge if HRC wins in November.

Looks ironclad to me.

Look at life another way.

Walk somewhere in NYC where there are lots of people. Anyone around you could be carrying a gun.

Walk somewhere in Houston where there are lots of people. Anyone around you could be carrying a gun.

In Houston, many of them will have acquired their gun legally after having been trained in its safe and effective use.

In NYC every one of them will have acquired their gun illegally for who knows what reason.

Now, in which city are you safer?

Here in NYC when I think of a second breakfast coming up I’m thinking of something totally unappetizing.

Generally caused by a homeless person on the subway who desparately needs a bath.

Sometimes caused by a encounter with a humongous, acclimated rat.

Well, since I’d already had “breakfast,” Second Breakfast couldn’t be “coming up.” Unless it WAS Second Breakfast. And that’s not very appetizing. As you say.

And we have a lot of homeless people here, but they mostly stay in the Henderson Water Street District, pretty much unseen by most. The town of Henderson (175,000 +/- people) only boasts a few, compared to Las Vegas and their 15,000. Usually in one area.
