New Dwarf Planet Discovered Far Beyond Pluto's Orbit

Pluto isn't quite as lonely as scientists had thought.

Astronomers have discovered another dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, the ring of icy objects beyond Neptune. But this newfound world, dubbed 2015 RR245, is much more distant than Pluto, orbiting the sun once every 700 Earth years, scientists said. (Pluto completes one lap around the sun every 248 Earth years.)

"The icy worlds beyond Neptune trace how the giant planets formed and then moved out from the sun," discovery team member Michele Bannister, of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, said in a statement. "They let us piece together the history of our solar system."

...

The exact size of 2015 RR245 is not yet known, but the researchers think it's about 435 miles (700 kilometers) wide. Pluto is the largest resident of the Kuiper Belt, with a diameter of 1,474 miles (2,371 km).

The research team first spotted 2015 RR245 in February of this year, while poring over images that the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in Hawaii took in September 2015 as part of the ongoing Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS).

"There it was on the screen — this dot of light moving so slowly that it had to be at least twice as far as Neptune from the sun," Bannister said.

Among the possible attributes of Heroes and Villains, Capes and other Parahumans, I have decided to forgo the "Evil Laugh" capability.

It causes me to cough, and I would not want to then be taken for someone "Truly Evil".

Thank you on behalf of Bill! It’s an achievement. He did very well, “Cum Laude.”

Yes, they will have fun chasing geckos. I just hope they leave the scorpions alone!

Roaches. Kittehs (and bearded dragons, and Sally) love roaches.

Worst nightmare is I lost my car keys and I can’t pen the refrigerator. Then my mind goes to something like why is it not called a frigerator but a refrigerator?

I think I would have been disappointed if Bill had not graduated “Cum Laude,” so I am very pleased that all that study and work paid off.

Excellent achievement, Bill! Do that in your life and you will go far.

If you could have some chickens, you wouldn’t be bothered with scorpions...

So I take it you’re in Azarona now, Sandy? What a climate change! I’m always thankful to be warm at least six months out of the year. The rest, I range from “uncomfortable,” to “downright frozen.” But I’ve been in the desert a long time, so 90 is “cool” to me. And 80 is definitely sweater weather!

How are the kittehs adjusting?

I like the little one on the left. But then, I enjoy odd colored kittehs.

I don’t know why I’m up so early. Three different texters kept me busy until after 2100 and by then, I was so wired with the drama that it was 2300 before I finally relaxed enough to sleep. And then up at 0400.

Am I going to make it to church today? I don’t know.

And did I tell you that when Eddie was here to notarize my Will, he showed me how to scan photos? I asked if he had the same kind of printer, and he said, “No, but I like to try and figure out how things work.” At any rate, I wrote down the instructions and can now get busy. ;o]

Whatever took a bite out of my arms will be dead today. I thought about pest control being here and it wasn’t that long ago, BUT. They didn’t think to spray under the bed and neither did I. So when I get done with my shower, I will go in and use the Raid and make sure I don’t have any more bites. This one was so bad it made me ill and I had to put an ice pack on it.
