New Dwarf Planet Discovered Far Beyond Pluto's Orbit

Pluto isn't quite as lonely as scientists had thought.

Astronomers have discovered another dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, the ring of icy objects beyond Neptune. But this newfound world, dubbed 2015 RR245, is much more distant than Pluto, orbiting the sun once every 700 Earth years, scientists said. (Pluto completes one lap around the sun every 248 Earth years.)

"The icy worlds beyond Neptune trace how the giant planets formed and then moved out from the sun," discovery team member Michele Bannister, of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, said in a statement. "They let us piece together the history of our solar system."

...

The exact size of 2015 RR245 is not yet known, but the researchers think it's about 435 miles (700 kilometers) wide. Pluto is the largest resident of the Kuiper Belt, with a diameter of 1,474 miles (2,371 km).

The research team first spotted 2015 RR245 in February of this year, while poring over images that the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in Hawaii took in September 2015 as part of the ongoing Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS).

"There it was on the screen — this dot of light moving so slowly that it had to be at least twice as far as Neptune from the sun," Bannister said.

You sure he will even notice his six-legged friends?

Good question. He tends to notice things only when someone else can be expected to deal with them.

Afternoon, all. Following this morning’s floor-mopping, I took Kathleen to her riding lesson. DP came along and took pictures. After bringing her home, we picked up Sally, bought gas (so Tom can get to school tomorrow) and then went to T.J. Maxx, where Sally got some exercise clothes and I got many 12 oz. bars of soap at $3.99, and some in little music boxes for $6.99 each. Who comes up with these things? The education ladies at church will love them (or claim they do and regift them ;-).

Then we went to Target and bought enormous socks for Tom’s enormous feet - the one and only package they had. And the blue nail polish for Lourdes at church, who loved it when I wore it last week.

Now I’m exhausted!

I feel quite certain that if I gifted my acquaintances with bars of soap, they would take it amiss.

That said, I’m still reminded of the Second Rule of Bob’s Book of Painfully Obvious Etiquette; — If someone offers you a breath mint, take it.

Key word is acquaintances.

Bag Balm falls into that category.

While an excellent product for human use and much appreciated in some northern non-urban circles as a stocking stuffer, not exactly the product one gives to near-stranger womenfolk.

Thank you. I think his offended expression is because he has several brothers and sisters.

I was sitting outside by the table enjoying the last rays of the setting sun as they progressed through their reds and and oranges and then faded into drab as the sun sank further into the western sea. Or Pennsylvania. Or whatever is off that direction.

It was quiet. Strangely so. Quieter than it had been for about three months. The noise generators (aka grandkids) had left with their parental units. Something to do with school starting tomorrow.

So I was sitting there watching the sunset and tracking the flight of a bat as it echolocated lunch. Unfortunately Mr./Mrs. bat in spite of swooping over my head and around my sides didn’t manage to intercept the bloodsuckers that had zeroed in on my infrared and CO2 signatures. And I was on the menu..

So I retreated indoors and let the sun finish setting without the benefit of my supervision.

"... as the sun sank further into the western sea. Or Pennsylvania. Or whatever is off that direction."

It's probably sinking into the Yellowstone caldera. Possibly that's why all those hot springs and geysers are there.

And that explanation is as supportable as is anthropogenic global climate change.

So it’s probably correct.. ;-)

Because we say so and that seems to be all the peer review required.

Helmsley Church.
Note original 1100's arch over the Altar.

Helmsley Church is totally surrounded by Trees.
Originally built in the 1100's , the current building is a Victorian repair and face lift.

There is nothing cuter than two kittehs “ fi’ ‘in.”

Baby humans don’t wrestle, so I like this! It gives one minutes of absolute enjoyment!

Good morning. In a bit, I will head down to put gas in the truck, then head to Wally’s again.

My Will is done once again, and now I can start the process of bequeathing individual items to those in the family who are interested in them. Most of my frogs will be going back to the gifters, unless they don’t want them, and then the frogs will go to a niece. And my vast fortune will be divided among my half vast hangers-on and/or shirt-tail relatives.

Those are wonderful photos, Moosie! Thanks for posting them.

I really like the inside of that church. That original arch is beautiful! Some of those early architects were way beyond their times, when it came to style.
