New Dwarf Planet Discovered Far Beyond Pluto's Orbit

Pluto isn't quite as lonely as scientists had thought.

Astronomers have discovered another dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, the ring of icy objects beyond Neptune. But this newfound world, dubbed 2015 RR245, is much more distant than Pluto, orbiting the sun once every 700 Earth years, scientists said. (Pluto completes one lap around the sun every 248 Earth years.)

"The icy worlds beyond Neptune trace how the giant planets formed and then moved out from the sun," discovery team member Michele Bannister, of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, said in a statement. "They let us piece together the history of our solar system."

...

The exact size of 2015 RR245 is not yet known, but the researchers think it's about 435 miles (700 kilometers) wide. Pluto is the largest resident of the Kuiper Belt, with a diameter of 1,474 miles (2,371 km).

The research team first spotted 2015 RR245 in February of this year, while poring over images that the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in Hawaii took in September 2015 as part of the ongoing Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS).

"There it was on the screen — this dot of light moving so slowly that it had to be at least twice as far as Neptune from the sun," Bannister said.

LOL! That’s a good one!

I should suggest Democrat election work to him, though. They pay! Plus, he would scare potential voters a lot.

Hmmm. Somehow I thought that would be more satisfying.

Lunch has been had, the rest of the stuff that needed to be put away has been. And clean clothes have been set out for tomorrow. Strange as it seems, I think I’m tired. I was going to sit and crochet for a bit before going to bed, but I think that’s off the agenda for today.

I have a couple of pillows that I can’t decide if I want to wash or if I just want to throw them out. They have really suffered from my night sweats. I’ll think about them, but I suspect they will have to be pitched. I don’t think one washing will be enough, and I can’t afford to wash them multiple times. So it looks as though I will need to buy two more. Eighteen months to two years is about the best I can get out of them.

There is now a small pile of things that need to be donated, either here, or at the thrift store, but some decisions are easier to make than others. :o|

I just found out that my friend/Avon Lady fell and broke her hip and is in rehab. I will have to take the message off again to find out the number where she can be reached. I feel bad for her, but I suspect she was drinking again. She loves beer (as do I) and stays up late to drink. (Which I don’t do.) So I’ll call her and find out what the scoop is. She has COPD so severely, she can’t talk to anyone (even over the phone) without coughing a lot.

After talking with her for 30-45 minutes, I feel embarrassed at my daily complaints. She is also a breast cancer survivor. She is a year older than I am, but looks at least 10 years older.

Walp, folkses, I’m headin’ fer th’ barn.

I still didn’t get everything done today that was on the agenda, but I did more than I thought I could, so it was a good day. Tomorrow, I’ll see what needs to be done in the coat closet, and at that point, I will decide how many more tubs and banker’s boxes I need. I’m pretty sure I will need five of the latter. I will check the price on them in the morning.

All in all, it was a pretty good day. I’m hoping for more of the same in the next few months.

All y’all take care and have a good night!

I hope you have a good night. Sorry about your friend’s fall!

Pat and I practiced Greek and Latin vocabulary while I sorted through my Cub Scout supplies. We can do it again tomorrow while I sort school supplies!

I know the Executive Director of the New York City Rescue Mission. If you like I can ask him where he gets the pillows for the shelter.

I have no idea how comfortable they are, but they are nearly indestructible.

I’m back. My F-I-L should be discharged today. Hopefully he got the message to see a doctor when he feels bad.

I’m glad to not have to watch Fox News all day (too much chance of seeing Hillary).

Thanks for all thoughts and prayers. Nully, being in your thoughs was - er - interesting to say the least. Thanks for letting me out in time. ;)

That works! Some days, my Fortress of Solitude is too solitude.

That tears it: I’m not going to CA any time soon. The I-15 is closed once again, over Cajon Pass because of the fires. Last time I was down that way, the area hadn’t recovered from the last fires. The burnt stumps and charred ground were still very much in evidence.

I’m back from Wally’s, and it wasn’t a bad trip, but we already have the smoke from CA. So much, in fact, that I couldn’t see Mt Charleston on the way home, or the entire valley. Some of the valley is visible, but the Strip is obscured by smoke.

I need to watch my spending. As I was heading for the check-out, a saw a Composition notebook for .50 cents and put it in my cart. Can someone help me with my reckless spending, please? ;oO

Probably the Rescue Mission gets their pillows in the same place that prisons get theirs, for pretty much the same reason. Indestructability.

We went to the Mint Hill Korean War memorial in aid of a Cub Scouts achievement for Frank. It’s a very nice memorial with, among other features, statues of our local Medal of Honor winners.

We also walked around in the park and looked for animal friends. There were some excellent funnel webs made by large funnel-web spiders.
