New Dwarf Planet Discovered Far Beyond Pluto's Orbit

Pluto isn't quite as lonely as scientists had thought.

Astronomers have discovered another dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, the ring of icy objects beyond Neptune. But this newfound world, dubbed 2015 RR245, is much more distant than Pluto, orbiting the sun once every 700 Earth years, scientists said. (Pluto completes one lap around the sun every 248 Earth years.)

"The icy worlds beyond Neptune trace how the giant planets formed and then moved out from the sun," discovery team member Michele Bannister, of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, said in a statement. "They let us piece together the history of our solar system."

...

The exact size of 2015 RR245 is not yet known, but the researchers think it's about 435 miles (700 kilometers) wide. Pluto is the largest resident of the Kuiper Belt, with a diameter of 1,474 miles (2,371 km).

The research team first spotted 2015 RR245 in February of this year, while poring over images that the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in Hawaii took in September 2015 as part of the ongoing Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS).

"There it was on the screen — this dot of light moving so slowly that it had to be at least twice as far as Neptune from the sun," Bannister said.

Still makes the news. Banned in Germany and Russia...

Oh, then not all that interesting, because too common. If it were the cult of Huitzilopochtli, that would have zip and zing.

Anyway, I’m glad you’re better!

Technically, it's not "glass", it's a ceramic that passes a large quantity of the visible spectrum of light. It's refraction index is 1.75. Most glass, and other transparent media, fall between 1 and 2 on the index.

It melts around 2100oF, so it's not much more difficult to work with than say... welding high strength steel. Although, for obvious reasons, hammer forging it is out. 4 times stronger than silica glass only means you need a 4 lbs hammer to break it instead of the trusty 1 lbs...

Wellnow. The Jiffy Lube had a computer problem, so I thought I would just go get the truck washed and come back for the servicing. HAH! The car wash (”Robo-Wash”) was broken, with no idea of when it would be up and running.

So I came home, but went to Walmart on the way. I found some Yellow Tail Riesling, and got a bottle or two, and some Perrier, because I like sparkling water, and it was the only sparkling water that came in small enough bottles for a 6-pack.

So I’m back, and I’m going to read another chapter. This one deals with Christ’s crucifixion, and I’m not sure I want to. But I will.

The Epic Fail Lawn Service is stumbling through their paces, this morning, and that means that those of us who want to sit in the ramada will have to endure the sound and smell of small gasoline motors. Oy vey.

Most people use aluminum foil instead of tin. I am not sure they know the consequence of this action. I myself have no need for these because of the intrinsic properties of my thick natural curly hair.

W/resp to my kids and swimming lessons I always considered not drowning as progress a-plenty. We’ve had a couple of ‘em in our brood spend a few frantic seconds of their lives NOT getting back to the surface of the pool & have to get hauled up bug-eyed and spluttering. They turned out none the worse for wear, but more serious about important things.

I never did get to where I could swim like a fish; more like a log. I could float on my back when I was a kid; last time I tried it, though, I went down like Titanic -— glub, glub, glub...

What a joy to see Isabeau, and you, too, Scoutmaster!

I still like Pluto, too ... once I’ve memorized something, I hate to have it changed.

I’m an excellent swimmer, but I’ve never had any luck getting a child to try it.

Bummer about the car, but at least you’ve got the wine. I’m going to lie down for a while before I go to the dentist.

I am, too. I’m hoping to get back to being a more regular contributor.

I’ve come to understand something, though: there exists no such thing as “solid ground”; everything is movable.
