New Dwarf Planet Discovered Far Beyond Pluto's Orbit

Pluto isn't quite as lonely as scientists had thought.

Astronomers have discovered another dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, the ring of icy objects beyond Neptune. But this newfound world, dubbed 2015 RR245, is much more distant than Pluto, orbiting the sun once every 700 Earth years, scientists said. (Pluto completes one lap around the sun every 248 Earth years.)

"The icy worlds beyond Neptune trace how the giant planets formed and then moved out from the sun," discovery team member Michele Bannister, of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, said in a statement. "They let us piece together the history of our solar system."

...

The exact size of 2015 RR245 is not yet known, but the researchers think it's about 435 miles (700 kilometers) wide. Pluto is the largest resident of the Kuiper Belt, with a diameter of 1,474 miles (2,371 km).

The research team first spotted 2015 RR245 in February of this year, while poring over images that the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in Hawaii took in September 2015 as part of the ongoing Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS).

"There it was on the screen — this dot of light moving so slowly that it had to be at least twice as far as Neptune from the sun," Bannister said.

If I don’t come back, remember it wasn’t my fault ...

When did you become a Democrat?

At about the age of 10, but I got over it.

Elen decided she wasn’t in the mood to drive, but if she never gets her license, it will be 100% other people’s fault (speaking of Democrats).

Thanks. I’m still working on my Vulcan routine. I have scheduled time for a complete breakdown in 2022.

After losing my dad when I was 17, and my mother when I was 36, I know from experience that the hurt can still attack and open the wounds of grief.

I will keep you in my prayers for courage and strength to deal with this great loss.

*hug*

After my trip to the Post Office sans teenaged driver, I wrote a letter to my uncle, used two stamps because it weighed 1.1 oz. with all the pictures, and put it out in the box. Next I will go to Walmart, after checking with the girls to see if they need to take anything to their choir's party tonight.

Ah, the USPS.

Demonstrating the failure of government solutions since the 1700s.

If it weren’t for the number of laws that require certain kinds of notices to be delivered via first class mail we could just eradicate the dang thing.

Ah, yes...the USPS...

I sent yet a third email yesterday, and told whoever that not giving me an answer was unacceptable, and that if I had to, I would once again contact the Postmaster General.

Today, I got a packet (how hard would that have been on June 28?) containing the entire protocol for “media mail,” including how it is charged. No cover letter, no apology, no nothing. So I will write a fourth email and tell them what I think of their customer service, and suggest that whoever was in charge of the original complaint should, at the least, have a refresher course in “Sensitivity Training,” and at the most, find employment where s/he doesn’t have to deal with the general public.

As well as suggest that the original clerk be given “Media Mail as a Homework Assignment,” for a refresher course. I loathe ineptitude.

I’ve been to Walmart. Ran into an acquaintance from Cub Scout Day Camp, and now I need to check our schedule to see when we start meetings, because he wants his son to join our Pack for the fall.

The girls’ pool party is rescheduled to Wednesday.

I’m about ready to fold up into a pocket-sized version and head down the hallway to the bedroom. I’m too tired to stay up for too much longer.

And I want a cheese sandwich. When I bought sliced cheddar the last time, Wally’s was out of the house brand so I got some Tillamook slices. Oh, my heck! I forgot what real cheddar tasted like, and I’m going to get some bread out of the freezer and make a sammich. Yum!

THEN I’ll go to bed! I also have to go make some adjustments to the clothes that are hanging in the bathroom so they will dry properly. — Done. And a new injury to my fragile skin to prove it. CLUMSY!
