New Dwarf Planet Discovered Far Beyond Pluto's Orbit

Pluto isn't quite as lonely as scientists had thought.

Astronomers have discovered another dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, the ring of icy objects beyond Neptune. But this newfound world, dubbed 2015 RR245, is much more distant than Pluto, orbiting the sun once every 700 Earth years, scientists said. (Pluto completes one lap around the sun every 248 Earth years.)

"The icy worlds beyond Neptune trace how the giant planets formed and then moved out from the sun," discovery team member Michele Bannister, of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, said in a statement. "They let us piece together the history of our solar system."

...

The exact size of 2015 RR245 is not yet known, but the researchers think it's about 435 miles (700 kilometers) wide. Pluto is the largest resident of the Kuiper Belt, with a diameter of 1,474 miles (2,371 km).

The research team first spotted 2015 RR245 in February of this year, while poring over images that the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in Hawaii took in September 2015 as part of the ongoing Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS).

"There it was on the screen — this dot of light moving so slowly that it had to be at least twice as far as Neptune from the sun," Bannister said.

“Tom is not the king of the world,” Kathleen observed. “Can’t prove that!” Tom asserted.

Way, way, way, waaaaaaaaaaaay back when there was a variety show called The Dinah Shore show. One guy did a regular segment called “King of the World” where he would give an address as the king of the world.

I still remember him saying, “Some people say there shouldn’t be a King of the World, or if there is, it shouldn’t be a self-appointed position. But I ask, ‘Who is more qualified than me to appoint me?’”

“Jueves” means Jove’s or Jupiter’s day, which associates it with Thor’s Day.

That sounds just like Tom. I worry about the world, when he gets out there unsupervised, but at least we’ll be laughing when it blows.

Kathleen is the Evil Queen, so she should know! LOL!

While I’m sitting here, I should scan some more photos, but I’m just kind of stuck where I am. Lethargy has taken over my body and my brain has been mysteriously replaced with mint jelly.

And I realized that in my waking moments during the nights, I have a tendency to rewrite the conversations of the day, online and in person, so that I sound like the Queen of Wisdom and Witticisms.

I figure it must be my brain in dream mode, but on the outer edge of it.

At 0801, I called and rescheduled my appointment, but the switchboard can’t do it for specialty clinics, so they sent a message. I will hear from the pain clinic later today.

We’ll be leaving in less than half an hour to go trampolining.

I remember the Show of Shows, but no specific actors on it. Just that Dinah Shore sang a lot and swirled her full skirt and thousands of petticoats when she came on stage.

Dinah Shore has always been associated with golf to me. I don’t remember ever seeing her perform.

Interesting. Sorry, but I don’t feel like trampolining today.

I’ll just sit here and wait it out.

For a while, she was associated with Burt Reynolds, but they were both rich and famous then.
