Pluto isn't quite as lonely as scientists had thought.
Astronomers have discovered another dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, the ring of icy objects beyond Neptune. But this newfound world, dubbed 2015 RR245, is much more distant than Pluto, orbiting the sun once every 700 Earth years, scientists said. (Pluto completes one lap around the sun every 248 Earth years.)
"The icy worlds beyond Neptune trace how the giant planets formed and then moved out from the sun," discovery team member Michele Bannister, of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, said in a statement. "They let us piece together the history of our solar system."
...
The exact size of 2015 RR245 is not yet known, but the researchers think it's about 435 miles (700 kilometers) wide. Pluto is the largest resident of the Kuiper Belt, with a diameter of 1,474 miles (2,371 km).
The research team first spotted 2015 RR245 in February of this year, while poring over images that the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in Hawaii took in September 2015 as part of the ongoing Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS).
"There it was on the screen this dot of light moving so slowly that it had to be at least twice as far as Neptune from the sun," Bannister said.

The hummingbirds outside are furious this morning, and Bill the Cardinal seems to be having a conniption, too.
Oh, it’s not Bill: it’s Mrs. Bill. I wonder what she’s so upset about.
Encountered a somewhat similar case of perhaps unintentional Finngrish in a documentary of the Winter War.
A woman was describing the Finns use of the puukko knife against the Soviet invaders. Brandishing one on camera, she referred to it as a weapons system, with a sly smile. So it may have been just wry Finnish humor.
Proceed to the hot link for reading suitable when snowed in by a Finnish type winter.
More than you ever wanted to know about Finnish Bayonet History and Doctrine and The Puukko knife
The Finns I have know are a dour lot, they have to invite Estonians, over to teach them how to party and tell jokes that actually are funny.
Reminds me of an old saying, "An actuary is like an accountant, but without the big personality."
LOL!
Similar, but the Estonians are a joyful lot. I mentioned them because they are the only ones able to talk with the Finns...that Finno-Ugric language thing.
NC, had your employer been able to rustle up an Estonian engineer to translate, the job would have been done quickly, precisely and with much great laughter all around, drinks afterwards.
Hungarian is a Finno-Ugric language, too, but (according to the chart), Hungarian is “Ugric,” while Finnish and Estonian are “Trans-Baltic Finnic.”
Busy day today , see Ya'll later. :D
I just read an excerpt from the Wiki-Leaks on FB, so I’m all read-out for the morning.
But I save the article because, oddly, it looked interesting. ;o]
Ta..........
Well, my old philologist friend Pete could point to old charts showing that the Baltic Latvian, Lithuanian, and ancient Prussian languages were offshoots of the Slavic group. Pete used to skewer such with great glee disproving them.
Pre-internet a lot of garbage found its way into textbooks. Come to think of it, it still does.
I may not be able to get there if it keeps raining. There are a lot of accidents this morning, and road closures due to flooding. I will see how it looks at 0700.
True, one never knows, but the lecturer on “Barbarian Empires of the Steppes,” to which I’m currently listening in the van, also said Hungarian is Finno-Ugric.
I just checked my prescription, and it can’t be refilled until the 12th. That means I’ll have to make another trip next week, and I don’t want to do that. I will call this morning and reschedule the appointment for then.
And I will go to Wally’s and get another tub and more boxes.
Ah! A textbook example of a textbook example.
LOL - morning, Bob!
Sounds like a plan! I need to get the Spanish music arranged for Sunday before I go to practice for a wedding on Saturday. Or something like that.
Back from Wally’s. As I suspected, the rain kept the Blue Hairs down to a minimum. The Old Ladies don’t feel safe walking on wet stuff.
So I got my exercise today, for sure: all the way to the opposite end of the store from the doors and back. And I walked fast!
Win. I’m on my way to Asuncion’s, then back home with a stop at PetSmart for crickets.
The rain has quit for now, but the cloud cover is saying it will be with us quite a while. And my back is telling me the same thing. I will have to take some Ibuprofen, but that will have to wait for a few hours for the morphine to wear off.
Otherwise, I’ll go to sleep at the wheel. Or keyboard, as it were.
Now, it’s time to read.
And speaking of reading, I just read some of the WikiLeaks material about HRC and it doesn’t look good for her. It is a definite read, by all means. If you can find it, read it. Meantime, I will try to find the link on FB for you.
Whoops - Viernes is Friday, not Thursday. Not a problem, though, because I needed to go that way for the crickets anyway.
