Well, my old philologist friend Pete could point to old charts showing that the Baltic Latvian, Lithuanian, and ancient Prussian languages were offshoots of the Slavic group. Pete used to skewer such with great glee disproving them.
Pre-internet a lot of garbage found its way into textbooks. Come to think of it, it still does.

True, one never knows, but the lecturer on “Barbarian Empires of the Steppes,” to which I’m currently listening in the van, also said Hungarian is Finno-Ugric.
