This very evening I have to go to Geek Squad to pick up my PC which had crashed thanks to Window 10. All my files & apps are gone. I didn’t realize what a dud this OS has been.

All my files & apps are gone. Sorry to hear that but you violated one of the original, cardinal rules of computing - never keep your data/files on the hard drive.
Programs can be reloaded after a crash, but lost data is gone forever (although
SpinRite saved the day a few times :)

Not so much as a simple backup of your data files? I guess that habit will change.

All my files & apps are gone. If your hard drive still works, that is probably not true unless someone ignored warnings of data loss and instructed Win 10 to reformat the drive. The "upgrade" install, and even a typical install over Win 7/8 from a Win 10 iso file, preserves your old files.
