One thing Star Trek always does well is push beyond social boundaries, often featuring progressive storylines that question controversial issues of the time.
The new Star Trek series on CBS will also feature progressive characters and stories, maintaining the tradition of going "where no one has gone before."
When asked about those kinds of story lines, showrunner Bryan Fuller confirmed that the new series plans on going back to Star Trek's roots.
"I think the progressive audience that loves Star Trek will be happy that we're continuing that tradition," Fuller said to Collider.

Star Fag?
Great. Another show to miss.
So, what are we supposed to ne ‘progressing to’? I ask that frequently of ‘progressives’.
Never get a good answer.
then it will wither and die like everything else touched by progressives
Another show ruined.
So which direction do the slimes face 5x a day?
What “progressive” audience? I didn’t find the original series to be all that progressive. Spock was the only reason I liked it.
“Where no one has gone before”
Yeah that sure is going back to it’s roots. I enjoyed the original series but even back then the episodes which pushed liberal social ideas were the real stinkers.
I sometimes watch the one with Capt. Picard then all of a sudden they show this hideous Black woman wearing a ridiculous hat and I just turn it off.
Bet this series includes an Imam for a for the ship’s counselor.
Star Trek has always been “progressive” since its inception. The only thing different today is the boundaries of what is acceptable, especially sexually, have expanded.
Isn’t forcing a country to accept unlimited immigration a violation of the “Prime Directive?”
The left always, ALWAYS, ruins all television programming with their psychotic urge to spread their ideology.
The Original Series was very “conservative” from a relative viewpoint. A few story lines that were “unconventional” has led the left to believe that this series must, MUST, be used to “shape our minds” to follow their beliefs.
As much as I enjoyed the previous iterations, I now have little desire to follow this garbage.
But Star Trek has always been generally left-of-center. I read a great article several years ago about how the Serenity/ Firefly franchise was actually Libertarian (and I agree).
I think the most right-wing sci-fi show in recent years was Space Above and Beyond .
I think they DS9 thing you’re referring to is really completely unfair.
Both characters were hosts and symbiotic beings, not human or strictly female.
ST:TNG did the whole concept of gender neutral and Riker getting involved with a neutral that was curiously identifying female which their society found disturbing that a gender male/female concept could exist.
I don’t find this whole thing outside the realm of what Star Trek has always been.
When stations in the 60’s refused to air Uhura and Kirk kissing that was more of a social taboo than anything being discussed today that we’ve had to either explain or had to explained to us.
I am still awaiting the necessity of Facebook offering 76 gender and sexuality definitions.
None have been forthcoming.
“Broke Back Enterprise”? Kirk and Spock get it on?
did a dirt bike run them over ?
I think I won’t watch a minute of that. And if I think of it I will root for the Romulans.
