Anton Yelchin, a rising actor best known for playing Chekov in the new "Star Trek" films, was killed in a car accident early Sunday, police and his publicist said.
Yelchin, 27, was struck by his own car as it rolled backward down his driveway in Studio City, according to Los Angeles police Officer Jenny Hosier. The car pinned Yelchin against a brick mailbox pillar and a security fence.
He had gotten out of the vehicle momentarily, but police did not say why he was behind it when it started rolling.
He was on his way to meet friends for a rehearsal, Hosier said. When he didn't show up, the group came to his home and found him dead.

A few years ago in the Aspen or Breckenridge area, a Domino’s driver was killed in this manner. His car got stuck, and in the process of trying to get it unstuck, it ran over him.
I think I see a possible explanation...
Wrong franchise. Terrible nonetheless.
Dreadful, poor guy. RIP.
*ping of interest*
I think they'll have to recast. They can't kill off the character of Chekov just because this guy died unexpectedly.

Whatever. He was a Russian immigrant. Send them all home. It is our way now. Sad he died but at least it takes care of one problem.
I hope to God you're kidding.
From his bio (Wikipedia):
“His family is Jewish; in the USSR, they were subjected to religious and political oppression. Yelchin had said: “My grandparents suffered in ways I cant even begin to understand under Stalin.” “
Dittos ...
God, what a random and horrible way to die. :( RIP.
I don’t know if they will recast or not. If this had happened after the first movie, I have no doubt they would recast. But after three movies, it will be a hard call.
Since Abrams established this particular series of movies as an alternate timeline, they might kill off Chekov and bring in a new character.
I liked him, too. Good young actor.....seemed mature beyond his years. Guess not. Sad.
Fright Night was filmed in my neighborhood. Very nice guy. My son and his friends say that he was very genuine.
Yes you are correct, it does not pertain to me. Interesting fact though, and one I had never heard before. Can’t imagine why that would be the case though. I guess just one of those obscure facts that really offers no explanation as to why there is that correlation. I was never so enamored with it though to the point of dressing up as a character. In fact no movie or show has ever inspired me in one way or another. In the case of Star Trek, it was just a way to entertain for an hour, minus commercials, and then it was forgotten. On the other hand I thought Star Wars was rather childish, and not even very entertaining.
Yes, and I knew that when I said it. That is why I said the Force wasn’t with him. I guess we can consider my dark joke a failure, since I am having to explain that.
I am kidding. For the most part, that is. There has been a lot of verbiage similar to this on many other news stories lately. I was just being snarky (hence the name) but I’ve seen this especially on the Orlando killing. Shame is, they weren’t even speaking about the killer but on the people killed.
Strange days!
The vehicle was a Jeep Grand Cherokee. Some of these had a shifter design that returned to a middle position when placed in park, so it isn’t obvious from looking at the shift lever whether it actually is in park. Vehicles with those shifters were recalled, but recalls never catch all affected vehicles.
I passed on buying a BMW because of the chintzy electronic shift lever that can flop into the wrong gear.
The vehicle he owned is a Jeep Grand Cherokee. I own the same vehicle, and can understand how this happened. The 2014 & 2015 models have a very strange setup with the gearshift. You cannot shift smoothly between gears like you can with most cars. You have to sort of “bump” your way through each gear until you get it into park. If you don’t do it just right, the shifter can bounce back from “Park” into “Reverse” without the driver realizing it. I’ve been driving for over 40 years, but have had a couple of instances where this happened to me. I took my foot off of the brake, and had the car start rolling backwards because it bounced back into reverse. (You would have to drive one of these vehicles yourself to appreciate how easily this could happen.) I recently received a Recall notice in the mail from Chrysler that basically said they were aware of the problem, and hoped to have a fix ready by the end of the year. It went on to say that, until then, ‘make real sure the car is in the proper gear before exiting the vehicle.”
Use the emergency brake at all times to.
RIP for the actor.
Ah...dark humor. Ok. Maybe a /sarc notice in the future?
