I loved the F-8.
I’m fairly certain that going supersonic over London is strictly Verboten, and they would know who did it by now.
If that’s not it, could be fun to follow/speculate.
Another Roswell?
“So who was shooting and at what?”
Now THAT’S the big question we’d all like to know the answer to!
My B-58 experience was very low. It removed the snow from the pine trees. From that moment the Hustler became my favorite USAF plane.
Was on the signal bridge of the USS Denver off North Vietnam in Spring of 1972. Watched an RA-5 coming from the beach at mast-high altitude full burners. The boom was tremendous. Signalman said CIC tagged him at 1000mph.
I can only imagine the performance of the plane when lightly loaded and no external stuff.
The maneuver was apparently not approved for the airframe but they did it anyway to shut up the fighter guys. Would have loved to hear the racket of those four engines in afterburner.
We moved to Fort Worth in ‘74 about 10 miles from the old Carswell SAC base. The first time they had an alert I thought we were in the middle of an earthquake. The whole house rattled. At first it bothered me but soon it gave me a warm and fuzzy feeling knowing what they were about. A couple of squadrons of B-52’s and KC-135’s does make a racket.
One too many take-out vindaloo....
Of course, later on you realized that SAC base was a primary Soviet target.........I felt like I had a bulleye painted on me when I was working for several years at Pearl Harbor, knowing the Chicoms had it set to take out first.
The whole country has a bulls eye on it. Knowing that SAC would hit ‘em back is where the warm and fuzzy came from.
Watching the BUFFs doing their touch and go’s was something else looking up and seeing their topside as they made their turn in was amazing.
