Cruise ship Infinity slams into Ketchikan dock

Linking to a YouTube video showing Cruise ship Infinity slamming into berth 3 Ketchikan Alaska.

I use the float adjacent to pick up clients from here till September (fishing charter)

My wife left work less than hour before collision and could hit this berth with a rock from her office.

We had high winds today gusting 40 knots plus. You can see thrusters in full on mode and I understand pilot/captain attempted to drop anchor.

“They brought back a Christmas ornament model of the ship. I hope it didn’t sustain much damage”

I’m sure you must have packed it away safely.

If you catch the glimpse of the forward flag, my guess is a 30 knot wind from starboard...those cruise ships are like sailboats, the lateral surface area is huge. You could tell his side thrusters were on full...not strong enough for that wind. Bet he knew he would take out the dock from 100 feet out...just no stopping it.

Seems like they should have held off docking until the wind died down

So often, cruise ships, when sound decisions are made, one has to wonder what was involved in choices the captain makes. It seems that if nothing goes wrong, it was deemed a good decision.

There are reasons for it. It was explained to passengers once on a particularly iffy port call with questionably safe tender rides to shore. There are considerations such as economics in the port, what to do with the passengers when a call doesn't happen and restocking considerations for the ship.

It's remarkable there aren't more accidents, minor and major.

Remember, kids; Force = Mass X Acceleration.

Better call Maaco.

That's the ship I was on (in Alaska) when 9-11 happened. They took good care of us after we made it to Vancouver... they moved us to a sister ship (Mercury) and gave us free room and board until we could get flights back home (about 6 days).

Guy needs to learn how to hold his phone so his fingers aren’t in front of the lens.

I was fishing in Ketchikan a year ago today. Rough weather then too.

LOL
Actually, it is packed away safely. I only see it at Christmas, along with everything else the twins brought back for me from their trip.

My first trip there was 1986.. 14 day cruise, saw 10 ports, wifey hates the cold and snow tho.. and the skeeters would eat her alive.. but it is a great place to get lost in the wilderness if ya want to.. or just kick back and watch the ice floes break up and flow by.. and then chase the salmon up a creek

Baranof Fishing offered my a free day this year if I came back due to poor conditions last year. Nice offer but opted for Homer earlier this week.

Good outfit and I’ve known the owner well since mid-80’s.

I’m sure you’ll have a great time in Homer too.

Already back from Homer and fishing was great. Caught about 6-7 halibut per day (kept my limit of 4 total) and limited out on rockfish all three days.
