I splurged and subscribed to Harpers Magazine to gain access to their archive going all the way back to the mid-19th century. This could be fun. I need to get a new printer before I can do major posting since it is necessary to print out the pages in pdf format. World War II just about did in my old Dell printer so I need to replace it. Here is just a taste of what we will have to look forward to. Notice that the Current Events section includes some of the events we have been reading about in

World War II just about did in my old Dell printer... So your printer is the last casualty of that war?
I also note that Harper's is very sparing in their use of paragraphs. Did they cost extra back then?

So your printer is the last casualty of that war?It was a member of the Last Peripheral club. My modum gets to drink the bottle of brandy they have been saving all these years.

One wonders how zealous Col. Sumner was in suppressing the “free state” militias. Or was he just going through the motions.
Such is the stuff of a Civil War; the people who would normally be responsible for maintaining authority and order are in fact partisan themselves, and cannot or will not do so in an impartial manner. While I would be sympathetic if Col. Sumner turned a blind eye to the free staters, on the other hand, it’s part of the cycle of descent into civil war.
The government itself is splitting along fault lines that divide the country. A pro-slavery acting governor and an army officer perceived as “true governor” cannot bode well for a stable solution.
