Something strange is happening to the oceans. As coral reefs wither and fisheries collapse, octopuses are multiplying like mad... cephalopodssquids, octopuses, cuttlefishare booming, and scientists dont know why. An analysis published today in Current Biology indicates that numerous species across the worlds oceans have increased in numbers since the 1950s.
The consistency was the biggest surprise, said lead study author Zoë Doubleday of the University of Adelaide. Cephalopods are notoriously variable, and population abundance can fluctuate wildly, both within and among species.

Tough, but tasty!
His minions increase and multiply ...
Yum!
It’s time to eat more calamari steak?
Someone released the Kraken.
A couple of us Americans spent a week in Marseilles setting up a backup system for a mainframe customer. For a celebration party, the head of the customer IT department took the team out to dinner. The appetizer dish was ante pasta with chunks of grilled octopus. My friend and I were visibly hesitant, but being good sports, we tried it. We ate so much that they brought out a second plate.
Deep fried squid or octopus is OK, but grilled was really good.

Octopus sashimi! Got tentacle?
What is the premise for this? First I've heard of it. Why can't so called science writers invoke just a little science at least, instead of making unsupported supposed statements of fact?
(kind of like Tom Brokejaw just asserting that terrorism will increase as a result of more guns in private hands. Well, private guns have increased by some 100 million since the obamanation and I don't see it.)
Evolution speeding up, you need eight arms to push away all the floating crap in the ocean nowadays.
Taking over?
Cephalopods were always there.
Something over 15 years ago, an article in, hmm, "Ocean" magazine (I think that was the name of it) had an article about how overfishing had opened up an opportunity for the jellies to take over, and that they were well on their way to doing that. Thanks BenLurkin.
Paging Captain Neno..........
I see a movie called Ocnado in the future.
The "Kraken" has been following me around all day. Not absolutely positive, but I hear him and smell his breath. d;^)
Loves me some squid and octopus. Japanese or redneck style.
Smoked taku poke from Fresh Catch in Kaneohe. Best Evah.
Why not Zoidberg?
Cephalopods are marine predators. Not apex, but many are not far from it. Can’t imagine that their population explosion signals disaster.
