> Am I the only one upset by this...

As a veteran who served in Vietnam from 1969 to 1971. Yup, you’re the only one.
We should have normalized relations with Vietnam 30 years ago, so that we could trade with them and build factories there.

Obama probably thought it was the opening of the first Vietnamese showing
of Metropolus.

Well, we’re friendly enough with Japan now.

And Germany.

We are friends and allies with Germany and Japan. Times change and people change. While Vietnam is fresher in our memories, normalization is best for everyone.

This does not in any way diminish the honorable service of our heroes, living or dead.

Thank you vets, for your service.

I served during the Vietnam *era* but never served outside of CONUS.I did travel there almost 10 years ago for reasons that would take time to explain. It's possible that my lack of service there disqualifies me from expressing an opinion worthy of consideration.

However...

The short version of my thoughts is...1) we made peace with Germany and Japan...2) China, today, represents a danger to the world that dwarfs anything they were in the 60's and anything Vietnam was in the 60's.Given that undeniable fact it could,IMO,be vigorously argued that we mast strengthen any ties we might have with countries like the Philipines,Thailand,Taiwan,Vietnam,Singapore and Australia...among others.

Just sayin'....

After the fall of Vicksburg, the citizens there didn’t celebrate the 4th of July for 75 years. That’s how long the US should have waited before going back to Vietnam.

For nine years running, my husband and I rode our Harleys from Boston to attend Rolling Thunder...from ‘91 to ‘99.

I am so appalled by this treasonous pResident.

Germany and Japan are our close allies now. It's the way of the world, always has been. Your enemies today could very well be your allies tomorrow. France and England were enemies for hundreds of years. Thank God they were during the American revolution. Without France's help, we don't beat Britain. We both have a true enemy in the region, China. We need as many allies as we can get against them (Vietnam, South Korea, Japan, Philippines)...

I dunno, I don’t see much difference between what he did and what Jane Fonda did.

I guess the same argument could have been made against Germany and Japan, but now they are some our stronger allies!

I don’t love it but I do think its a move to counter what China is doing in the Spratley Islands just a hop, skip and jump from Cam Rahn Bay.

There are no permanent friends or enemies, only permanent national interests

The Vietnam war was a mistake because the communists there had successfully taken on the role of anti-colonialists. The d***** French, instead of wrapping up their colonies nicely at the end of WWII, tried to keep them and the USA ended up looking like we supported colonizers.
