Homeboykris, a 9-year-old horse, died shortly after winning the first race of the day.
The Maryland-bred horse came from behind to win the race as a 9-1 underdog. It collapsed on the way back to the barn after exiting the winners circle.
Tragically, Homeboykris collapsed after leaving winner's circle on way back to barn after winner's circle and died.

Four-year-old Pramedya collapsed in the middle of the fourth race with a broken left front leg and was euthanized on the track. It was the fifth start of the fillys career. The horses jockey, Daniel Centeno, broke his right collarbone in the fall and was taken to a local hospital.
A cause of death for Homeboykris has not been determined. The horse will be taken to New Bolton Center Hospital in Pennsylvania for a necropsy.

I stopped watching long before that. The modern thoroughbred is an accident waiting to happen, too much muscle and not enough bone.I stick to foundation quarterhorses and Spanish Mustangs that have a proper balance of muscle and bone strength, horses that can run flat out without hurting themselves.
I bet they are working on that right now.
Made the mistake of checking out the comments at the link. All the “stop the barbaric races and mistreatment of horses” huggers are all out in full force. People who don’t like horse racing should watch something/anything else and leave those of us who do alone.
The comment section at the Washington Post is usually packed with far left loonies.
Neither have I.
Broken heart that day.
I’ve had horses most all my life and I have had no use for horse racing most all my life...
The ASPCA have minders at every significant equestrian event in the country. Trolling for propaganda that will help with their agenda to stop all equestrian activities. Horses are athletes and they have the same sorts of injuries that human athletes experience. Broken legs have very different outcomes with humans on the disabled list and horses put down. Horses just can’t survive a broken canon bone. As for heart defects, they can turn out the same with a dead athlete.
Horses love to compete, just like human and those that participate in sport are well cared for, unlike many “pets” slowly starving in a grassless paddock.
Must be one of the reasons we rarely clink on any story link from the WaPo. These people seem to be just totally “my way or the highway”.
We got a retired race horse when I was a teenager. Moon Ace lived until he was 38. By that time he had lost all his teeth and had to be fed special senior horse chow that didn’t need to be chewed. An ancient horse doesn’t look as healthy as a young horse. My parents were reported dozens of times for “animal cruelty” by do-gooders who thought he was being abused because of his appearance.
When he was young, it was kind of like riding an equestrian crotch rocket when he went into a full gallup. He died not long after his longtime inseperable companion Morningstar passed away. She also made it to her 30s.
That’s neither satire nor opinion. It’s a statement of fact.
Boy, that sucks. Buying an animal for that kind of money and having it drop dead on you...that is not a good day at the track.
The way she was built, Ruffian was an accident waiting to happen.
