Interesting. That’s exactly what I read once... that they laugh at the term “Native American” and refer to themselves as American Indian.

The only time they call themselves “Native Americasn” is when conversing with the media or government officials.

American Indian is normal usage. Keeps people from mixing us up with Indian Americans. :)
