ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) New York would be the first state to ban the declawing of cats under a legislative proposal that has divided veterinarians....

Good grief - now someone is going to try and tell us what we can and can’t do with our cats. My cat, who has never been outside for nine years, doesn’t know that she doesn’t have any front claws but my furniture does.
So what do they think is going to happen to the cat who’s shredding everything, if they can’t them declawed.
They can still rip the curtains and furniture right after you’ve trimmed their claws.
The two times we tried the claw covers, one set lasted two days, and the second set were chewed off before we got home from the vet.
They will scratch anywhere and everywhere except the scratching post. even if you sprinkle catnip on it.
I’m not saying it should be made illegal but having your cat declawed is a pretty rotten thing to do.
Hmmm, maybe I’ll get into the furniture repair biz in NY...
I totally agree with you on this.
They can do it with lasers now. Faster healing and less pain.
i did it. I will simply never do it again. I’ve never forgiven myself. My cat was never the same.
Introduced our cat to a scratchy post and a scratchy cardboard claw sharpener and she’s never tried to do the furniture. Training. Declawing is barbaric.
Hurry, someone get this human toilet Hillary Clinton to a vets clinic asap.
Too bad she wasn’t neutered years ago.
Yup, I hate it when this is done to cats :-(
I'd rather put up with scratched furniture than do such a thing. To a cat, you are God... treat your cat the way you would want to be treated if you were a cat.
The golden rule paraphrased for cats :-)
I just love the little furballs.
You are not fit to be a cat owner.
People who declaw cats ought to be treated just like any other animal abuser.
Same goes for people who cut out their dogs’ vocal cords because they don’t like them barking.
Yeah.. my cat’s digits are more important than any freakin couch.
Let em have it.
My 2 year old destroys everything too. It’s just stuff.
How is that the business of the state?
I personally don’t think people should declaw cats, but it’s not up to the state to make laws about it.
I like both cats and dogs, they are both smart and trainable, if the owners would just take a little time for that.

A perfect example of a classical liberal (or libertarian) attitude regarding Freedom.
I have a friend here in Florida who felt compelled to declaw a couple of his cats.
Though I personally wouldn't do it, it certainly doesn't mean I have any right, or business, via legislation, to prevent him from doing it.
In general, this is where we properly draw the line between actual Freedom versus making a bunch of feel-good nanny-state laws in an attempt to coerce behavior from people.
If you don't want your friends and neighbors declawing their cats, convince them not to do so via education and persuasion; don't try to pass some petty law that forces them not to do it.
JMHO, of course...
Some vets consider declawing a cat is a toe amputation. What I don’t know, is if the cat feels “phantom limb pain” after the procedure. That would be awful.
Since no declawed cats were interviewed for this article, we’ll never know.
