Searching for Bobby Fischer . . . The Hustler . . . The Natural . . . Hoosiers . . . The Big Lebowski . . . Some of the most memorable movies center around a game and dedication to mastering it.
What are your favorite movies in which a game plays a central role? Board games, card games, sports . . . any games will do!
” Tilt! “ starring Brooke Shields and one of the A-team guys, I think.
The Natural (Wilford Brimley’s unforgettable performance), Field of Dreams, Slapshot, The Color of Money.
My all time favourite sports/game movie has to be the 1971 Canadian classic “Face Off”. Filled with colour action footage of NHL games from the day, it includes Maple Leaf Gardens, the Detroit Olympia, Philadelphia Spectrum, L.A. Forum (with the Kings wearing their home gold uniforms), and the California Golden Seals at home at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Arena.
The Sting (gambling/sports)
Three Days of the Condor
Tin Cup.
The Most Dangerous Game had all the elements. Here you have big game hunting with people as the targets. Just about every genre all rolled into one.
Not even a hockey fan, but I consider “Goon” to be the best sports movie of all time. It’s awesome. My wife loves it too.
I respectfully submit a film that had it all.
A kid ashamed because his father took work that was “beneath him” during the depression.
A local sports legend who returned from war and quietly disappeared into a life of drinking and gambling with negroes and low life white trash.
The beautiful heir to her daddies dream ex-girlfriend who refused to let daddies dream die.
And the mysterious man from nowhere who helped them put it all together.
The Legend of Bagger Vance.
Very likely Will Smith’s best acting job and unlikely to be equaled by him.
And I hate golf with a passion.
The Hustler.
The Cincinnati Kid.
North Dallas Forty.
Searching For Bobby Fischer.
House Of Games.
Slap Shot.
Hard Eight.
The Gambler (James Caan).
The Greatest Game Ever Played.
Hillary’s America, Hillary the Movie, and upcoming: Clinton Cash.
Just to name a few playing the biggest game of all.
ping in memory of an FR long timer
Probably showing my age, but
“Damn Yankees”.
Knute Rockne, All American.
Pride of the Yankees.
Jim Thorpe.
I also like Hoosiers, Miracle, Brian’s Song and The Longest Yard (the Burt Reynolds one).
Wow, can’t believe I forgot “War Games.”
That was a great movie.
two come to mind. Bull Durham, and Gladiator
