Vanity question: just saw doctor, said my cholesterol and blood sugar sky high! Politically active does not count as exercise!!!! Who knew? Doc recommended exercise bike, the portable kind. Saw some on amazon in the $100 price range. Can anyone recommend good brand? Do not need bells and whistles, just durable and simple for senior woman to assemble and fit in car. Want to be fit enough for upcoming election!

An exercise bike is a good idea but I would prefer a good pair of walking shoes. I would look for a bike on Craig's list or at yard and garage sales.

I am going through some health issues myself. What I have discovered is that just about every human health problem in our modern world can be traced back to the food we eat. I have determined that medical doctors are trained to treat the symptoms of poor diet and exercise with chemicals and surgery.

- you can’t out exercise your fork

The old saying "Your are what you eat" is absolutely correct. Humans were designed to walk, run and forage for food outdoors. The farther we get from that the more health problems we have. Almost all of them related to processed food, especially sugar and high fructose corn syrup.

Simply put: In this modern world we eat too much. We eat the wrong things and we expend too little effort to obtain them. Eliminating the effort to obtain food would not be a bad thing if we did not at the same time process the nutrients out of the food we do eat and add addictive (Yes addictive) sugar to everything.

Hat tip to taxcontrol for his excellent advice

whether or not you get the bike, start a walking routine. Walking is probably the single most efficient exercise there is, especially for the beginner.

Yes! Although some folks have back or joint problems that make extra walking an ordeal, it's great if you can do it. This is what makes dogs especially helpful -- you can ignore a bike or avoid a walk, but your dog will motivate you to get out there every day!

DO NOT GO ON A DIET !!

Just start eating healthier. I dont drink 4 liters of My Dew every day any more and feel much better.

Dont forget. “medical errors” has moved into 3rd place in what kills most of us in this country.

I recommend buying a german shorthair puppy. You will be forced to walk hours a day for the next 7 years.

LOL, GMTA!

Save your money. You will ride the bike for a week and it will collect dust after that.

Instead go to the health food store and buy a canister of Canary Seed Milk (Alpiste) powder. You stir it up in water and drink it twice a day. It flushes fat out of your system and will lower your sugar count dramatically over a several month period. They drink it every day down in South America. A side effect is you lose weight. Mr. GG2 lowered his blood sugar 15 pts in 90 days.

Drink the Alpiste and walk around the block every evening and you should be in good shape.

I know you are getting flooded with suggestions, but my doctor told me to just take a simple chewable multi-vitamin. He actually recommended I take the “Flintsones” for kids vitamins. My cholesterol problem is that I don’t have enough “good cholesterol” for which he recommended eating more olive oil. When I want some junk food... I actually eat these potato chips that are available around here at Sam’s Club, Walmart, and Fred Meyers that are fried in olive oil.

Persistence is the key.

You have to work out EVERY DAY for 60-90 minutes. No excuses, no feeling bad, no lack of time, do it no matter what.

I have worked out every day for more than 4 years, and I now feel much better.

I’m battling the same thing. My weight got up to 350 about 4 years ago and I developed type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure. I’ve made a lot of changes to my life style and have lost 53 pounds so far. Here’s what I’ve learned.

I quit drinking alcohol. It’s just empty calories.

We rarely eat anything out of a can. It tends to be really high in sodium.

We quit eating meat. We still eat a lot of fish. A lot of meat has been injected with chemicals and salt to add flavor - especially poultry. They have salt and butter injected under the skin to make them taste better. It works, but the added fat isn’t good for you.

We walk a lot. I average 26 miles a week. When I started I had trouble walking a mile without stopping. Now we can walk 7 or 8 miles at a time.

Eat oats. I buy the old fashion type and mix it in with my breakfast cereal. Oats are proven to lower cholesterol. Don’t get the instant ones - they’re full of sugar.

Recumbent bikes are okay for exercise, but they don’t burn the amount of calories that a treadmill or elliptical machine will because you aren’t using as many muscles.

Our goal is at least a half hour a day of exercise and we walk 5+ miles at least once on the weekend.

Pay attention to serving sizes. My daughter lives with me, so I generally make two servings of everything when I cook meals - no leftovers.

I keep a bowl of raw cauliflower, broccoli, and celery in the fridge to snack on.

Don’t shop when you’re hungry and don’t buy snacks. A little restrain in the grocery store will keep you out of trouble at home.

I rarely eat out. It’s hard to control your diet when you’re in a restaurant. If I do have to eat on the road, I go to subway.

Cut out soda. Even the diet sodas have a lot of sodium and the sugar substitute they use has been shown to cause long term health issues and result in weight gain.

Don’t go on a fad diet. Find something you can stick with. Some fad diets, like Adkins will help you loose weight, but most folks gain it right back when they go back to eating what they use to.

We try to get a lot of variety in our diet. We experiment with different vegetables and recipes.

Stick with it and don’t get discouraged. I gained several pounds around Christmas, but managed to loose it later. As my doctor told me, “It took you 10 years to put this weight on so don’t expect to loose it all in a few months.”

Before buying, you could try out the equipment at Anytime Fitness, Snap Fitness or a similar 24/7 gym that charges by the month but doesn’t require a long-term membership.

As others have said, walking and hiking are good because fat stores really get burned during long walks, and walking is easy on the joints. You don’t need any exercise equipment to walk either.

Its me again. Former Fatty McFattitude.

- you can’t out exercise your fork

This cannot be repeated often enough. I work out 5 days a week and weigh 138. At 226 pds(5' 4") I worked out 5 days a week but was consuming MASS QUANTITIES OF FOOD.

You think its a no brain er but over eaters are like alcoholics. I have always been an over eater, my parents are from Italy and its OK to love food, its part of enjoyment of life.

BUT I had to learn not to over eat. Dont laugh its hard for we over eaters but I did it!!
For those of you who don't have this problem you will not understand.

In order to do this I had to cut out the stuff that made me crazy namely carbs. Now that I am down to a healthy weight, I can re-introduce some things but not all. End result. I am happier. I was miserable I could not look at myself.

Not sure about the ‘fit in a car’ part.

Don’t think Ketogenic diet will help with cholesterol. It’s cutting out carbs. It is mostly fats. You’ll lose weight, but there’s just too much fat.

It’s also a bit dangeroys. Goid to have doctor’s supervision on that diet.

It’s good if you have epilepsy.

Wouldn’t bother with machine unless you’re confined to home for some reason. If you want to live long and FEEL GOID for all of it moment to moment, day to day, you don’t need to punish yourself with boring exercise ... You gradually change your diet and daily habits ... Develop a life that by its nature includes movement. There is no use being spiritually fit if your physical body is incapable of transmitting joy and peace to your brain ... Or even if if you feel fine at the moment, something is just getting ready to break ... And then no matter how good a human you are .... You spend your last 10 years in pain. Screw that! Just change your entire life ... But gradually. Does not require equipment ... Just commitment to change and patience. You will feel much better ... And you may realize that you didn’t notice the quality of life slowly going down.

1. LOTS of water (I drink 50-70 oz a day)

2. Buy a Cardio Heart rate w/strap to accurately monitor your heart rate - VERY IMPORTANT!!!!

3. Consider HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) - take it slow if just beginning. Start 3:1 ratio of “Slow” Intensity to “High” Intensity. I’m now at 1:1 for 20-25 minutes a day 5-6 days a week

4. Sugar is poison - I eat a LOT of chicken

5. Protein “shake” after each workout - powered mixed with water is GREAT and MUCH more economic than pre-mixed

6. As others have mentioned, it takes time so be patient

Good luck!

If you are like me, that exercise bike, treadmill, rowing machine or any other piece of “home” exercise equipment will soon gather dust. Save your money and get a good pair of walking shoes and a dog, if you don’t already have one. Walk at least one full hour a day. Briskly. Having a dog with you helps as well as an iPod type device that you can listen to music or talk radio on.

Eliminate junk food from your diet and cook from scratch as much as possible as opposed to instant dinners and other convenience foods. I like broiling or grilling fish and chicken with lots of Brussels sprouts, hot peppers, mushrooms, garlic, broccoli, onions, etc. and the occasional steak. Breakfast is whole fat yogurt with frozen blueberries mixed in. Lunch is usually hard boiled eggs or can of salmon or sardines.

Walk a lot. Add oatmeal to your diet (will lower cholesterol...may not have spelled that correctly). Lower carb intake, especially bread products. Increase protein. Eggs & vegetables make a great breakfast. And walk some more. Decrease television time. Read three chapters of the Bible a day. Pray daily or more often. A great time to talk with God is when you are walking.

Went from 262 to 172 and got my blood sugar under control.

Simple. But ‘simple’ does not mean ‘easy’

I think everything has been covered here. Most of it any of us could have heard from our grandmothers.

-Avoid refined sugar like the poison it is
-take a nice long walk after dinner
-eat more, smaller meals. Eat most of your calories in the morning and afternoon
-nothing in excess.
-Stretch; take a yoga class if you can; a properly stretched out body feels and works much better
- don’t eat garbage; you are what you eat, fast ‘food’ is not the right fuel for humans with rare exceptions in case of emergency.
-no election, no debate, no candidate, no issue is worth getting stressed out over; stressing out solves NOTHING and hurts you.
-count your calories; keep a journal of everything you eat for an average week; there are online resources to figure out how many calories you are consuming. There’s quality and timing and other dietary considerations but everything is measurable and knowable.

As to the exercise equipment, go to a good sporting goods store and try different types. Elliptical machines can be easier on the joints; a cheap exercise bike is literally a pain in the butt (and neck, and back).
