Question for ye experts. Has it ever started raining hard during the race, and if so, did it appear to affect the expected outcome?

Plenty of times. Horses that run well in the rain are called “mudders.”
From what I read earlier today, the mudder in today’s race is Exaggerator.

I understand about the mudders, but I'm thinking an unexpected downpour that started during the race might not be agreeable to some horses. And therefore it might affect the odds.

This male co-host wearing girl doll clothes is a perverted embarrassment.I fell asleep on the couch and a voice started grating on my nerves waking me up. It may have been the same little freak but whatever it was, it was wearing a pink pony tail and about to tinkle down its leg over the Derby hats. The tv was immediately turned off. I don't care who won as long as they're piping that disgusting freak show into my home.

I wish the race would start. Too much BS beforehand. I don’t care what a flaming gay guy thinks of what the women are wearing.

No, he’s just a “social” commentary added host. He does next to nothing about the actual sport.

Wow, I guess he is that good. On very quick informal study, I picked him and Gun Runner for the exacta. GR almost got there but good horse Exaggerator got him for 2nd.

A flaming faggot dressed like a clown adds nothing to the "social" commentary............The Shriner's should sue NBC for that ridiculous head dress he was wearing.

Mudders run well on what is dubbed an off or muddy track. They are generally rated slow. When it starts raining, most tracks turn sloppy as the water remains on top. Sloppy tracks are generally fast. Front runners do very well in the slop because they get pelted with little if any mud.
Also, on a muddy, or deep track, horses may be reshod with mud caulks which are a bar to help them dig into the softer going.
Hope this helps your future handicapping from one who learned most of this through a mis spent youth!
BTW, I had the tri. Did not pay much given the horses finished 1 2 3 according to the odds. Darn, was expecting more.
