A couple of five-week-old kittens were named Shrek and Smurf by a rescue staff after they were found colored blue and green with permanent marker.
The naturally black-and-white cats were discovered with all of their white spots colored in and were brought to Bradford Cat Watch Rescue by the West Yorkshire Police.
This is a dreadful act of cruelty, and who knows what untold damage this may have caused, charity volunteer Katie Jane Lloyd told BBC.
The Bradford Cat Watch Rescue has sought help from veterinary poisons information services for assistance in cleaning Shrek and Smurf, according to BBC.
The kittens have been bathed repeatedly since they were found Monday, but the blue and green ink remains embedded in their fur.
Lloyd has posted a series of updates about the pair and most recently said the kittens were doing really well.
We have been nursing these kittens for the last 36 hours and they are now much brighter... in personality, she wrote on Tuesday. The color is fading and they are now taking their feeds well.
That is messed up. Good thing I do not live in a ‘hood’
Do you beat your kid when he writes on his little sister with a Sharpie too?
This is stupid and immature, not cruelty. Natural oils will break the Bond between fur and ink with no harm.
Well, this isn’t as bad as the story I read a few minutes ago about a veterinarian who shot a cat through the head with an arrow, then posted a picture of herself on facebook proudly holding up the not-quite-dead cat.
These adorable little guys (girls?) will make it, and no doubt have no trouble finding a forever home.
There was no indication of intention to hurt the kittens. It might even have been a couple little girls who wanted the kitties to look pretty.
They tend to do things like that.
And actually difficult to believe. I bred 1 litter of german shorthaired pointers. Breed standard calls for tails to be docked at 3 days old. The night previous to taking them to the vet to have tails done I carefully marked in black sharpie pen where the tails were to be docked. The next morning I went to the whelping box to check on everyone and mom had completely licked clean every speck of ink.
Who could do that to poor little kitties? I know, I know, far greater cruelty than that goes on all the time. Anyone who thinks that is funny is depraved. I hope they cats will be okay. Maybe the affected hair has to grow out.
I couldn’t even read the article-——things like this drive me NUTS !!!!!!
.
While I agree that this was an act of stupidity and childishness, I don't see it as an act of cruelty that could have caused untold damage. Permanent is really a misnomer when we are talking about fur And your idea of shaving the poor things would be a far crueler act than the original, just as the repeated bathing is much more stressful to the animals than just letting the pigmented fur fall out naturally.
The kittens are really lucky they didn't fall into the hands of PETA, who would surely have euthanized them to end the horror of blue and green fur!
Nope. I did a little further research. Of course, the NY Daily News is not known of the quality of their journalism. They seemed to have forgotten to include this: It seems that in that part of England, people color kittens different colors before throwing them into a pen of vicious dogs. People bet on which kitten will succumb first. Hey, that’s REAL sport; putting a tiny helpless kitten in with fighting dogs. Must take someone with junk the size of poppy seeds to get off on that. I hope they find the perps and throw THEM to a pit of fighting dogs. After painting them pink, of course.
Hopefully it’s only on their fur, not their skin, which would be really bad.
I have no sympathy towards the perpetrators.
How is this news?
Ok, that is sick.
If that was the reason then I am all for beating the tar out of them.

That was my first thought. Maybe not to the skin...but close.
I don’t know that people are dicks...or some kid doesn’t know any better.
Gosh, they painted the kittens to throw them to wild dogs for “entertainment?” Wow that is totally depraved and mean.
Anyone who would enjoy that is not human.
