Did not need a study to know cats do not like hugs. My cat doesn't.

It's so ghey when dogs hug each other.

Our chihuahua/dachshund mix puppy whimpers with steadily increasing insistence if my wife or I aren't hugging, holding or cuddling him, 23 hours out of every 24... so: go figure. ;)

They do like being carried, fed by hand and having the tummy rubbed.

My ‘girls’ sleep with me. They do not like hugs or my lying with my arm draped across their torso. They do however, like to lie stretched out with their back against my back or, with their heads resting on my belly or buttocks, depending how I am sleeping. (I could stand to lose some weight!)

But I found that both cats and dogs do enjoy gentle stroking and scratching behind their ears.
People can tell whether an animal likes something or not, just by paying attention to their reaction.

Our Samspon went over the rainbow bridge seven years ago and I still miss him. We rescued all 150 pounds of him through the American Bullmastiff Association. He was a cuddler, again, all 150 pounds of him! I’ll never forget trying to find ways to keep him off of the furniture. Somebody told us to put newspapers on the couch because the sound annoys them. We came home that evening to find him snoring on the couch, under the newspapers, like a homeless person.

Our Cavaliers will squirm to get out of a hug when we try. The Golden initiates hugs by trying to get my arm around him and pressing against me. He doesn’t squirm or struggle to get away, he squirms to get close.

A lot of dogs don’t like to feel immobilized, but nearly all dogs crave affection in any form and so will put up with it, for at least a little while.
