Trapped! Vegan restaurants struggle with humane pest control

MIAMI (AP) — Even the wellbeing of rats, roaches and spiders are a concern for animal activists. But they also pose ethical dilemmas for owners of vegan restaurants who need to keep those pests out of their kitchens while trying to abide by no-kill values.

Melanie Cochran, owner of The Wild Cow Vegetarian Restaurant in Nashville, Tennessee, was adamant about not using traditional pest control services when it first opened. For a few years she was able to keep pests at bay, but when the restaurant developed a problem, she called an exterminator even though she said it went against her vegan principles.

“We have to focus on the bigger picture. Vegan restaurants need to stay in business as a way to put a dent in the dominance of the factory farm system. We want to show people that it is possible and easy to reduce one’s meat intake, or even eliminate it entirely,” she said.

Vegans: reducing the reasons to keep animals alive.

I am not a fan of factory farming either because there is often cruelty done by stupid ass low level idiots there, and also because they produce an inferior product compared to non factory farmed animals amd animal products.

Vegans and vegetarians are some of the kost unhealthy folks I have ever met. Thin does not automatically mean healthy. You need good animal fats and proteins to stay healthy. Vegetable oils are the unnatural ones, not existing in nature, but having to be chemically extracted ie hydrogenated, out of plants.

“They don’t mind killing Plants”

Plants, like embryos, cannot convey pain or emotions.

Some Vegans and Hippies would dispute that.

They don’t seem too worried about the habitats destroyed by all that farming of the high-density vegetable matter that vegans must eat when they aren’t eating the animals that conveniently convert low-density vegetation into meat. Nor do they seem to worry much about all of the insects, rats, mice, birds, etc., killed when those farmers plow the land and harvest the plants.

Simple fact: it is impossible to live without killing.

I know the problem well.

My wife is Buddhist, can’t kill anything.

Her friend, also a Buddhist had roaches. I actually found a birth control trap for roaches. You break a vial of some insect growth hormone in a trap and for 6-8 weeks the vapors will prevent roaches from reproducing. It actually works better than the poisons, and you don’t have to worry about pets or children getting into it.

Rats are an entirely different problem. The law says you can use snap traps, glue strips or electricity to kill them, but if you live trap them, then you have to transport them 20 miles from the capture site and release them in a wooded area. What a pain in the butt. The critters get into our garage in the winter, so I trap them and release them in a nature preserve in the next county. About a third of the time, when they get released, red tail hawks nail them before they even get off the parking lot blacktop. I’m pretty sure they don’t last much long even if they make it to the woods.
All my wife knows it that they were transported and released alive.

I suppose dipping them in a bowl of egg yolks and then dredging them in tray of seasoned all-purpose flour and deep frying them until they are golden brown on the outside is out of the question?

It’s a little like asking the drivers of the all-electric cars whether it runs on coal or oil. You can get some great looks from that!

Even my stepfather (God rest his soul) fell for that one, and he was otherwise a pretty level-headed guy.
