WASHINGTON — Suicide in the United States has surged to the highest levels in nearly 30 years, a federal data analysis has found, with increases in every age group except older adults. The rise was particularly steep for women. It was also substantial among middle-aged Americans, sending a signal of deep anguish from a group whose suicide rates had been stable or falling since the 1950s.
The suicide rate for middle-aged women, ages 45 to 64, jumped by 63 percent over the period of the study, while it rose by 43 percent for men in that age range, the sharpest increase for males of any age. The overall suicide rate rose by 24 percent from 1999 to 2014, according to the National Center for Health Statistics, which released the study on Friday.
The increases were so widespread that they lifted the nation’s suicide rate to 13 per 100,000 people, the highest since 1986. The rate rose by 2 percent a year starting in 2006, double the annual rise in the earlier period of the study. In all, 42,773 people died from suicide in 2014, compared with 29,199 in 1999.

Many unemployed have lost hope of ever resuming a “normal” life. Laying off an employee these days is like signing a death sentence.
I think each age group and race has it’s own reasons. Deinstitutionalization has to be contributing overall but certainly in the 20-45 year old white male category, economic despair has to be a major factor. All in all, it reflects the contributing decline of western civilization IMO. That the rate has decreased for blacks suggests that black people are more accustomed to poverty and despair and less inclined to kill themselves over it though their homicide/incarceration rate would suggest that they are more inclined to kill others because of their economic despair than are white people. All in all, I think this is a reflection of the new American reality that Obama has created.
Emile Durkheim would attribute it to an increase in anomie.

Because the unemployment rate is so high- many peopel lost their homes thanks to unemployment- I’m sure many families broke apart because of unemployment too- and hte fact that our dear leader is more interested in giving money to illegals and refugees, some to the tune of $45,000 a year, and our government PAYING criminals not to commit crimes while good people, legal citizens, have no jobs I’m sure has not set well with hte newly homeless in this ocuntry!
A big part of this is the increase in suicides among unemployed white men. The Obama years have not been good to what used to be the base of the Democratic Party, as illegal immigration continues unabated.
Obama promised hope and change but this looks more like hopelessness and despair.
They should have hung on for just 8 more months. ***hole will be gone then and Clinton will be in prison where she belongs.

Yeah, lots to be depressed about. But at least in my case I have enough optimist and determined SOB in me to not give up.

I hug my little girl whenever I can. I think that the white family is falling aparr. No loving father and mom is working all the time. There is also a lot if racial pressure and guilting of white children in this society. Girls are more susceptible to the stress that goes with that.
