Windows 10 is Lying to Me About Anti Virus Conditions

Posted on 04/17/2016 7:05:29 AM PDT by savedbygrace

Windows 10 keeps popping up a message in the SysTray, trying to tell me that Windows Firewall AND Webroot AV/Firewall are both disabled.

I have intentionally disabled Windows Firewall, but Webroot is fully up and actively protecting my system.

What's up with this Microsoft lie?

Is there any way to stop the fallacious popup?

What's up with this Microsoft lie?

Or maybe it is just a mistake.

I get the popup that says Defender is turned off. Then it won’t let me turn Defender on because I have installed SpyBot, even though I don’t use the SpyBot virus protection.
So I just scan on a weekly basis and ignore the popup.

Just because your computer is new to you, doesn’t mean it’s drivers/controllers/etc are up to date.

What I find to be the most annoying "FAD" is the GD search.

When it doesn't work, you have to go kill at least one process to get it going again.

Heck, updating a relative small directory may take more than just a moment.

I have steam coming out of my ears right now due to Microsoft.

As a CPA doing taxes and rushing to meet the deadline, Microsoft forced an update to my Windows 7 operating system yesterday.

I have two computers and I use them to back each other up.

The Microsoft update changed the drivers for my graphics card and caused an Atipcie64.sys fatal boot error..... on both computers. They are totally frozen, will not boot in safe mode, will not restore, will not diagnostic repair. Talk about stress on top of stress!!!!

Yesterday I purchased another computer, downloaded new software so I could complete and e-file taxes, and used Linux to surgically remove the needed files and transfer them to the new computer. All caused by Windows updates.

I did that, and the warning keeps popping up at least once a day.

Similarly, I purchased, downloaded and installed Quicken 2016 yesterday from amazon.com.

It wouldn’t get past the Intuit ID creation, so I couldn’t launch it. This was bad because before the Intuit ID process, it deleted my previous version of Quicken.

It got worse because Intuit tech support is not open on Saturday. Fortunately, I found the Chat and a guy there helped me. Turned out that the version of Quicken 2016 that you download from amazon.com is not the most recent. He directed me to the update and everything worked like it should.

I am still in transition after having a hard drive failure. The computer service guy put in a new drive and loaded Win 10 for me, but without a verification key. He said my Win 8 key would work for Win 10, since it was an upgrade to it.

Got home and was wading through restoring my stuff on the new drive when I saw my OS was not authenticated, locking me out of stuff. Where was the key? Well.... The Win 8 key didn’t work.

So I called Microsoft who put me through to a tech who said, “Reload Win 8 with your Win 8 key, then update to WIn 10.” Aargh. But it worked.

Then I loaded Rollback, when blew the system out the door and made me realize I had no way to safe start, as Win 10 has moved that function. I futzed around and blundered into the “repair” system and found a means to system restore without being at the main GUI.

Like I said, I’m still cleaning up the mess.

This happens occasionally with one of my 2 Win 7 laptops. When it does, I notice the icon for Vipre is not in the tray. Just opening Vipre ends the problem. It’s not a big deal, but I will usually assure myself Windows is full of crap. What else is new....

There is a quirk in Win10 upgrade.

When I did the Win7 to Win10, a pop-up window asked for a verification and then stalled when I put the computer’s Win7 serial in.

Later, I retried the installation. When I asked for the verification, I ignored it and closed the window. It worked — updated to Win10 with the Win7 code.
