A woman lost in an Arizona forest for nine days survived by drinking pond water, eating plants and spelling out help on the ground with sticks, authorities said Tuesday.
The sign helped lead rescuers to Ann Rodgers, 72, in the White Mountains of eastern Arizona earlier this month, the state Department of Public Safety said. Rodgers declined to comment when reached by The Associated Press.
However, Rodgers told a Tucson TV station on Tuesday that she had food and water in her car but ran out after several days and turned to survival mode.

She was nuts to leave her car. Plus, if I drove in the desert, I would keep several gallons of water in the trunk. Food is immaterial in short-term survival situations of ten days or less. Exposure will kill you first - possibly within hours, then thirst within days. Only way lack of food kills in that timeframe is if one is diabetic or has some other medical condition.
She was in the sticks....
Looks like a beautiful place in which to have a “walkabout” - only one would want to be a bit more prepared than she was.
A map indicates there is really only one major road to Phoenix through that area. Why did she get off the road?
She was in the sticks. If she hadn’t been in the sticks, she wouldn’t have been lost.
A depressing piece of prose.
She probably doesn’t want to hear this, but at her age, this Lady should stop going that far into the dry Arizona forest unless there is another person (not just a dog!) with her.
She is very lucky her body held out, and that none of the plants eaten were poisonous.
Sounds like she may have had some cognitive issues prior to getting lost and those issues caused her to become lost.
For example, she was way off course from her intended trip, ran out of gas, and abandoned her car.
She also abandoned the area she wrote HELP in. She is very lucky to be alive after making so many mistakes.
She got Dennis DeYoung from Styx to belt out help. They were rescued by Mr. Roboto. Domo arigato.....
I am amazed she found a forest in Arizona. Some relatives moved to Phoenix area and there were no trees there!
She had too much time on her hands...

Drive north on I-17 for about 30 minutes. You'll find them. Eastern AZ has a lot of forest, too. It's just that most folks settled in Phoenix and Tucson, where the trees aren't.
Nice elk skull and antlers.
Wonder if anybody picked ‘em up.
