The first largescale study of ancient DNA from early American people has confirmed the devastating impact of European colonisation on the Indigenous American populations of the time.
Led by the University of Adelaide's Australian Centre for Ancient DNA (ACAD), the researchers have reconstructed a genetic history of Indigenous American populations by looking directly into the DNA of 92 pre-Columbian mummies and skeletons, between 500 and 8600 years old.
Published today in Science Advances, the study reveals a striking absence of the pre-Columbian genetic lineages in modern Indigenous Americans; showing extinction of these lineages with the arrival of the Spaniards.
"Surprisingly, none of the genetic lineages we found in almost 100 ancient humans were present, or showed evidence of descendants, in today's Indigenous populations," says joint lead author Dr Bastien Llamas, Senior Research Associate with ACAD. "This separation appears to have been established as early as 9000 years ago and was completely unexpected, so we examined many demographic scenarios to try and explain the pattern."

The ancient genetic signals also provide a more precise timing of the first people entering the Americas--via the Beringian land bridge that connected Asia and the north-western tip of North America during the last Ice Age.
"Our genetic reconstruction confirms that the first Americans entered around 16,000 years ago via the Pacific coast, skirting around the massive ice sheets that blocked an inland corridor route which only opened much later," says Professor Alan Cooper, Director of ACAD. "They spread southward remarkably swiftly, reaching southern Chile by 14,600 years ago."

:’) The key word is, “intentionally” — the population of the American mainland is estimated (based on town ruins and such) to have reached a level that wouldn’t be seen again until the 20th century; arriving with the Spanish and Portuguese were various contagious diseases which had already worked their magic on earlier generations of Old World populations, and there was a massive dying. In Bernal Diaz’ account of Cortez’ expedition, the process appears to have begun between their march into Mexico City, and their flight out.

Now that's one gooooood lookin' mummy!
Nicely played
Too late at night. Descendants. More likely what I meant
Has Billy Jeff opined?
Several years earlier, in 1996, when he had FBI-documented access to much younger, he took a shine to the 500-year-old frozen mummy, known as the Ice Princess, saying she was "good-looking" and if he were single he might ask her out. "That mummy looks better than I do on my worst days."

Yes, but that history is being deleted. The reason a few hundred Spaniards could topple native empires in Peru and Mexico was because other tribes would help; they had been enslaved and murdered by Aztecs and Incas forever.
Same extinction model for Neaderthals?
‘s fun.
That’s one of those “how many of each animal did Moses take on the Ark” types of things.
They’re not extinct in that they are our ancestors, at least Eurasia.
/bingo
Thanks for posting that!
Considering that the researchers are from Australia, nothing they say should be assumed to be more than political propaganda. The Australian universities claim they are scientific when they publish about global warming, but it’s nothing but their religion. Nothing that comes out of Australia as “science” should be given any credibility until backed up by other independent researchers from other countries.
In another venue, these very same scientists and anthropologists would be lecturing us on how species evolved through natural selection. The end effect of this, we are told, is that it is a natural process for species that are more suitable to fit into the environmental niche will survive and species that are less suited will die out.
Of course, we must never apply this to humanity, lest we are guilty of some -ism, like race-ism or cultural-ism. Along those lines, we will never be allowed to suggest that maybe the indigenous peoples should have adopted the culture of the Europeans. Instead the subtle theme will be that the indigenous peoples are victims who by their victim status and culture are somehow noble and really deserving of honor and even compensation.
We will also be forbidden to mention any wars of conquest that took place over the centuries among the indigenous peoples before they were overwhelmed by Europeans. Adhering to the meme that Europeans are always evil and indigenous peoples are always noble means that no amount of mass murder they imposed upon each other can possibly be worth mentioning.
And thus liberals (er, now “progressives”) show us how much they suffer from self-loathing.
Thanks for the information.
That’s right.
I got fooled. LOL
Are you telling me that is a real mummified human and not a Hollywood movie prop?

And there is where we get back to quick-freezing mammoths, for the frozen-food experts have pointed out that to do this, starting with a healthy live specimen, you would have to drop the temperature of the air surrounding it down to a point of well below minus-150 degrees Fahrenheit (-101.1°C). There are two ways of freezing rapidly one is by the blast method, the other by the mist process; these terms explain themselves. Moreover, the colder air or any gases become, the heavier it gets. If the volcanic gases went up far enough they would be violently chilled by the cold of space, as it is called, and then as they spiraled toward the poles, as all the atmosphere in time does, they would begin to descend.
When they came upon a warm layer of air, they would weigh heavily upon it and pull all the heat out of it and then would eventually fall through it, probably with increasing momentum and perhaps in great blobs, pouring down through the weakest spots. And if they did this, the blob would displace the air already there, outward in all directions and with the utmost violence. Such descending gases might well be cold enough to kill and then instantly freeze a mammoth.
The girl with the braided hair? It is a former human being, freeze-dried for centuries on a mountaintop.
