Tesla Motors Inc.’s unveiling of its new electric vehicle yesterday had the marks of an iPhone release—long lines of enthusiastic consumers, a glossy product and a CEO presenting in a simple black shirt.

Little new information came out about the Model 3, but with the car’s comparably more affordable $35,000 price tag and 215-mile range, Tesla is making a bid to become a mass-market auto manufacturer.

Why all the hostility towards this car? I see nothing wrong with advancing technology forward.

...

I suppose that’s the downside to conservatism. There is some downright hostility toward innovation, whether it’s technology or new economic markets. I’ve been seeing it for nearly 20 years here on FR.

I remember when Amazon was just a book seller, had no future, and certainly couldn’t justify its stock price.

Electric cars are not powered by unicorn farts?

They should be correctly referred to as coal and natural gas powered cars.

I have no problem advancing technology forward.... that is a good thing. What I do dislike is the hypocrisy of the environmental benefit claims.

I kind of liken it to the enviro-whackos spouting praises for the wind turbine generators, while millions of birds are getting whacked out of the sky.

Electric cars manufactures have been trying to get their act together for 100 years. I think if it was going to work it would be perfected by now.

Isn’t it something? There’s a contingent of folks, I think, who tote a load of free-floating hammers, looking for a nail, any nail.

Um, you can pay more than $35K for a Beetle. MSRP ranges from $19,595 to $36,050

Why all the hostility towards this car

A lot of it not so much an electric car (which obviously will be part of the future), but that the idea is being shoved down our throats.

If they come up with a good one in the near future at a decent price, I'm certainly interested. I just don't like being told I'm wrecking the earth if I don't buy one.

Actually, my old Chevrolet pick-up truck runs perfectly well on ethanol, which we rural Americans are for more adept at producing than are those OPEC folks.

LOL! No doubt but the base doesn’t start there. I wonder if the tesla has any options that would add to the price. Can you put a lift kit on one? How about some Monster Gumbo Mudders? Guess they’re not designed to go mud boggin’. :>)

Also ask an electric car owner how happy they are when they have to replace the battery.

It sounds like you don’t know what you are talking about. You can charge the Model S in about an hour, so I highly doubt that the Model 3 will take 52. Tesla also has stations where you can swap out the battery faster than you can fill a car with gas.

The real downside, after tax breaks, etc is the cost of replacing the storage batteries after 5 years or so. I would guess at least $20k.

From the looks of Post No. 38, I think they better offer an option of Sprinkler System. :)

American engineering talent has guaranteed that there will NEVER again be any danger of an OPEC embargo in the US.

Unless of course we keep electing Democrats...

Swap out a $20K part? Sure hope you don't get a dying battery on the last swap!!! :)

"85kWh * 12.5 center per kWh = $10.63 to charge it.

I think people will notice $10 per day, or $300 per month, and that is for current electricity charges. "

First off, the Model 3 is a 65 KWH battery, so $8.13 for a full charge. If you have a 50 mile round trip commute, that would be about 1/4 of that, or around $2/day - for a massive total of $60 per month.

The "entire nation" won't be going to electric cars for at least thirty years, at which point low-cost nuclear, solar and possbily LENR will make your other points moot.

I won't personally be buying an electric car anytime in the near future, but the misinformation flying around is pretty staggering.
