Woman's home demolished after Google Maps error
CNN Money ^ | March 25, 2016 | by Hope King

A demolition crew destroyed her building by mistake on Tuesday after Google Maps provided wrong directions.

Instead of navigating workers to a duplex on Cousteau Drive in Rowlett, Texas, Google Maps took them a block away to Diaz's duplex on Calypso Drive.

"[Google's] mistake caused me to lose my home," she told CNNMoney on Friday.

Google acknowledged the Maps error in an email, and said it's investigating the cause.

"Google Maps did indeed show incorrect information for the houses in question," a spokeswoman told CNNMoney. "Both addresses were shown as being in the same location (7601 Calypso Dr) on Google Maps... the issue was fixed as soon as it was brought to our attention."

Google Maps now points to Diaz's home accurately. (Video at source)

I agree, this is not on Google. The demolition company have the ultimate responsibility to validate the location before doing their work.

Now that’s a lawsuit against multiple entities.

She should, win. Ignorance is not a winning argument here.

Sounds like the Amos N Andy bit where they knocked down the wrong porch. Very funny bit. It would be nice if someone here on FR with better computer skills than me could link to it.

Well, we’re still here, right?

Hey, wait, there’s a big yellow squareish thing outside, hanging in the sky very much like bricks don’t...

Um. The demolition crew has apparently gotten a little lazy if all it did was check google before demolishing a house. Could they NOT tell that it might still have been occupied?

Google was clearly wrong. The Demolition Crew should get a full refund for everything they paid Google for the directions

I like to use Tom Tom while driving, but always confirm route with paper maps. In all cases when the device seemed to give screw up directions, a good old map was the only way to sort it out.

From what I read, she owned the entire duplex that had only cosmetic damage. It had been signed off it had no structural damage and needed only things like windows replaced, roofing, etc. She lived on one side, rented out the other. The one that was supposed to be demolished had more than half of the actual structure blown down.

Too bad Google doesn’t have billions and billions of dollars in assets that she could sue them for.

Google should just write her a check for double the value of her home. Chump change for them but scads of good press.

I like the old paper maps.

Not me. I could never get them folded back up again.
