An international research team has published a study discussing the possibility and consequences of a 'superflare' erupting from our parent star
If a superflare erupted from the Sun , experts have predicted it will have a "devastating" effect on the Earth.
It could break down radio communication, damage power supplies across the planet and threaten the stability of our atmosphere.
And, according to a new study published in the journal Nature Communications , the possibility is not as far-fetched as scientists first thought.
"We certainly did not expect to find superflare stars with magnetic fields as weak as the magnetic fields on the Sun," said Christoffer Karoff from Aarhus University in Denmark.

Caused by global warming, no doubt.
The basis of my book, EMP.
You mean millennials won’t be able to use their phones, go on twitter and Facebook or whatever the rage is now? Oh the humanity!
threaten the stability of our atmosphere.
Baaaaah, everyone knows it’s because the molten
iron core of our planet has stopped spinning and
we have to drill down to the center of the earth
and start it again with
Gigaton nuclear bombs.
One Second After
Knowing.
The movie sucked, but the last two minutes of The Apocalypse were hella kewl.
Read a short story many years ago (forget title and author, alas) with just this scenario. The protagonist’s girlfriend notes how bright the full moon looks, half an hour later Jupiter looks brighter than ever. He figures out that the sun has let out a huge solar flare and probably wiped out everything in the eastern hemisphere. He and his girlfriend buy as much food as possible and hope for the best.
You know, someone ought to make a movie about that.
They come out with this stuff every few years. I guess the news is slowing down.
Are we all gonna die again?
That’s what just came to mind.
The sun? What is it.
A big giant ball in the middle of our solar system. But that’s not important right now.
It happens every once in a while.
There is NOTHING you can do about it, except to figure out how to live without electricity.
The bigger issue is if something impacts the magnetosphere, stripping away the magnetic protection. This is what protects us from the particles coming at us.
Then we are the frog not in the pot...but in a microwave.
What they should be more concerned about is the LACK of Sunspots...and the coming ice age.
Sounds familiar. Anyone recall the title?
Would that rip the fillings out of our teeth?
You mean millennials wont be able to use their phones, go on twitter and Facebook or whatever the rage is now?
You mean millennials will actually have to carry on a conversation using their mouths?
“Knowing” was mostly good, except they grafted a cool ending from a completely different story onto it. Kinda like the author had a great premise, went with it, ran out of time and slapped a friend’s clueless but cool-sounding suggestion on the end. The story was good, the ending was good, the two had absolutely nothing to do with each other.
No they will not be able to use their mouths for conversation (a concept which will have some sort of learning curve for most of them) since they have to breathe and eat; therefore they will have to learn sign language ... if that is at all possible ...
