A lot of different factors can affect recoil. A full size military pistol will tend to be heavy, so recoil is probably not a big issue as far as recoil is concerned. As you say, terminal ballistics is an important thing to consider, and larger calibers like the .45 will reduce magazine capacity considerably. Ball ammo will tend to be more reliable though. Some pistols can be quite finicky with hollow point ammo too.

I have an early G22 and the magazine tends to jam when fully stuffed when I chamber round one. Any remedies or suggestions on better after market magazines would be appreciated.

When M-16 magazines were made under a monopoly by minority vendors, you had to download -2 for reliability. Early Glock mags were a known issue, especially the NFML (Non-Fully Metal Lined) mags.

I agree I think if they would have had better ammunition early in the war it would have helped greatly.

The reason a US service pistol needs a decocker and be a double action,(or at least did) has to do with the nature of the troops. Your average combat support or service support soldier does not get a lot of time with the handgun. He had training in basic and if his unit TO&E has them he will qualify once a year......maybe. In-between the sexual harassment training and regular MOS stuff pistol craft does not get a lot of time. The only time you pick one up, at least in the guard is if you go to qualify or shoot in yearly TAG matches, regular training ain’t happening.

So for whatever reason a trooper is issued with one, three magazines and a M12 holster. It stays there on his belt, loaded with the de-cocker engaged. The only time it will come out of the holster is to clear the weapon or because the sh-t has hit the fan. There are two reasons for the double action; a surprise attack or when one is skulking under cover waiting for a target to get close enough for you to take a pot shot.

If one is pulling the gun out of a holster on the fly, the double action prevents accidental discharges. With the M9 you can pull a loaded pistol out of your M12 holster, using the trigger and it will not go off. Not so with the 6 lb Glock, where the safety is on the trigger. Every police department I know of has had issues with this and the Glock unless you have the NYC 12 pound trigger can go off if the shooter used the trigger to pull the pistol from the holster. It happens and some of the fancy combat holsters do neot make it any better. By the way these police are folks that use pistols all the time, army pogues do not.

Every army that issues the Glock has it troops carry it with an unloaded chamber. Sounds good except you need both hands to make the weapon ready, not the best idea.

Now the M9 is actually a good pistol (I am old enough to have trained on both the M9 and the M1911A1), as it has a loaded chamber indicator. So if you are in the dark you can tell it is loaded, flick up the de-cocker with one hand and be ready to go. Very quiet.

The M9 is very accurate, with M882 ball it is supposed to be able to put 10 shots in 3 inches at 50 yards when new. way better than the Glock or M1911 as issued. I know fellows that won their distinguished badge with an issue M9 (though selected ones)

It is big, it has the defect of the open frame but after 30 years it has done quite fine.

what was wrong with it?

The .38 caliber round proved to have inadequate stopping power in that particular conflict. US troops had to fire multiple shots into the enemy before they could stop them. Thus, the US Army went from the .38 revolver to the .45 ACP semiauto, which served the US Military well for better than half a century...

I know, I don’t consider that a real safety. (Oh, I carry a Glock)

My concern is the lack of trigger disciple among many Soldiers, their finger will go on the trigger right as it comes out of the holster and they shoot themselves in the foot. Mine did. I have been retraining myself since I bought a Glock.

SpecOps types? I have no worries about them. They are obsessive about such.

even modern 38 ammo does not have enough stopping power?

a 45 is like a cannon in your hand

I’m sorry for your loss and thankful for your sons service.

Dad was a Marine. The Canal and Bougainville. He passed in 06. He would watch R Lee Ermey’s shows but hit mute whenever gunny would do his drill sergeant schtick. He HATED Drill Sergeants.

Glock is a funny company. They’ve refused to put external safeties on before when a large order was dangled. They’d probably do so again.

John Browning hated the idea of the grip safety on his 1911 but needed to make the US government sale. When he built the gun the way HE wanted to, it was the Browning Hi-Power with NO grip safety.

A friend bought a South American licensed knockoff of the 1911. It was identical (and in fact licensed by colt or browning) except no grip safety.

I often toyed with the idea of getting a Hi-Power....only a newer .40 S&W chambered gun. A good compromise caliber.

I appreciate the verification, I would be interested in advice on the best remedy. (short of getting another pistol)
Who makes the best aftermarket magazines for these early Glock mod. 22’s ?

.38 Special ammo, particularly +P, with modern bullet designs (not FMJ or the vintage Cop load of 158 grain lead round nose) performs well.

Sigs cycle everything. I have a P220 in .38 Super. Super is known for being a problem child in many guns. (A Colt I had would feed hardball and one or two brands of hollow points, but you could never trust it)

In the Sig? I can (and have) mixed 4 different brands and bullet types in the same magazine and it just keeps chugging along.
