The U.S. Army's chief of staff is searching for alternatives to the multi-year Modular Handgun System effort, to include piggy-backing on Army Special Operations Command's current pistol contract. Gen. Mark Milley has used recent public appearances to criticize federal acquisition guidelines that all services must follow when choosing and purchasing weapons and equipment.

Indeed, train with empty chamber. And the 17/19 mag interchangeability is definitely a plus.
That’s precisely why the m1911 was invented, to kill those drugged up moslems in the Philippines. It’s also why I own several myself, in case I have a run in with said drugged up moslems.
The main issue is lack of capacity.
One of several problems with the revolver is reload.
I actually think the Glock is a bad idea for standard Army issue. It may be fine for special ops people, but a standard issue service weapon is a completely different matter.
These pistols are going to have to take decades of abuse...and I know from first hand experience they get abused, big time. For similar reasons, most things in the Army are bigger and heavier than their civilian counterparts (just look at an Army tent for example). So I think the standard issue pistol is going to have to be heavy, all steel, and big.
I used to have one. USED to. First shot was always, and I mean ALWAYS, a flyer. Subsequent shots were fine, but that first one...
My 1911s shoot point of aim every single time.
I think it was actually the .38 Colt, but a light weight all the same.
guys would double tap the first rounds. Get on target with #2 after it goes to SA mode.
38 S&W 200 gr (13 g) LRN 620 ft/s (190 m/s) 176 ft·lbf (239 J)
38 Special 200 gr (13 g) LRN 679 ft/s (207 m/s) 204 ft·lbf (277 J)
Really? 28 more foot-pounds of energy would drop a Moro warrior? Get real.
Revolvers do not belong in the Army of the 21st century, when the Russians and Chinese have striker-fired large-capacity semiautomatic pistols.
Que?
15rnd mags are the de-facto standard for 9mm pistols.
Bull crap. Explain why.
Training is everything.
Oh boy, then we’ve got the Glockamole chip dip in every holster.
They had the .38long Colt back around 1900. It was a catastrophic failure against the Moslem Juramentados. That is why the 1911 .45 ACP was designed.
I’ve never shot a 1st gen Glock, but my 3rd-gen Glock 22 has never failed to feed or fire, except when the latter could be attributed to cheap ammo. It never fails on my competition handloads (minor power factor).
How about a Dardik semi-auto revolver.
The 1911 has a severe capacity problem. 7 rounds when your enemy is going to have 17 or more? Perhaps they could consider the 2011, but it has reliability issues. Glock makes plenty of models in .45 ACP. Why does a dated design like the 1911 have to be the standard?
The United States Army is switching from ball to hollow-point ammunition for its next generation handgun. The Army dropped the bombshell at the Modular Handgun System Industry Day in Picatinny, New Jersey. The event was held as part of the Armys procurement process to replace the Beretta M9 handgun and the ammunition used for the gun.
Good point about the Philippines conflict, which I also made above, with data. But the 1911 isn’t the solution, either; it only holds one or two more rounds than a .38 revolver. Glock (and SIG and others) make .45 ACP autos with serious capacity (>= 14 rounds).
And Glocks can't stand up to that? Nonsense. Service pistols do not have to be all steel.
“a lighter weight double stack double action semi auto”
Golly, that would be...a .45 Glock.
